Default dead spot and sputter

hello, i just bought a 2000 FLH police bike, it has 60K on it, the bike appears to have been well taken care of in fact it looks new. the previous owner just put v&h true duels with sampson slip ons, 510 gear drive cams, looks like a k&n filter with no back plate, and he said he had the local HD dealer flash the ecm. the bike runs very strong while taking off from a stop or under a load, but while just crusing just above idle it kind has a dead spot, and seams to sputter a little. i spoke with a local shop owner who is reputable, and he didnt have very good things to say about the local HD shop and thier tuning abilities, he told me that it sounded like i needed to install a race tuner for more fine tuning. the plugs look good, and just put new wires on it. just thought i would see if anyone else felt the same way or had any other ideas. thanks

Modding any FI bike requires a fuel management device like a Power Commander. Reflash is not enough.

I concur. A stage I dealer reflash is a method of fuel management, just really cheap and it usually works pretty well with all SE components, but you have non-SE components. I would recommend a more robust capability tuner, that can be used to tune your combination of components to meet your goals.

thats what i thought too, thats how it is with a car efi setup just wasnt sure about a bike. ive been riding an old shovel so messing with it was simple, this is my first efi bike, so i am kind of lost. the guy i know said he had a race tuner that he took off his own bike that would work and that he would sell it to me for $100. i think it was a dynojet. he is a pretty honest guy so i dont think what he has is junk or anything, he just owns the shop so he is always trying the latest greatest thing.

ok quick lesson, race tuner harley makes a few version screaming eagle race tuner= sert, seprt, sest u dont want sest its a epa legal street tuner.these are all a cable and software disc that alows the user to access and change the mapping on the ecm not alot of canned map choices there is a self tuneing one as well but i dont know much about it,tts mastertune simialer to sert but more fetures and some type of self tunning ability, then power comander vision also rewrites the map on ecm, then theres a bunch of piggyback systems power comander, fuelpack, and a host of others. in your case i would strongly recomend a dyno tune, find a reputable tuner (this is not easy the tune u get will only be as good as the guy running the dyno) and use wich ever system the dyno operator recomends it will be the one he is most familer with.

Sounds like he has a Power Commander, thats what I'm using and works good for tuning my stage I, but I still got the stock cam. I don't know how well they work with an aftermarket cams, but I'm pretty sure you can make it work.

it looked like some sort of piggy back deal, you plug the harness into it then plug it into the ecm. he said you could then plug it into a laptop and do all the tuning you want.

The nice thing about the PC is the huge library of maps available, chances are you can find one that will work good for you. I also added a DTT Twin Scan+ Wego AFR datalogger to assist with manual tuning, and the combination works great. With some of the new systems available now, I wouldn't buy a stand alone datalogger again. That money could go a long way toward an auto tune type system. Take your time and do some research to find a system that is right for you.

Sounds like bad gas/water in the gas. Ethanol in some older bikes will destroy the carb rubber gaskets.

i thought bad gas at first too, so i filled up with fuel at a station that somehow is getting away with little or no ethonol in there fuel. i know it doesnt have much if any because my car jumps from 30 to 34 mpg just by filling up there. and as far as the carb gaskets, it is fuel injected. i think i will try the tuner that he has, and see if it works. he told me i could try it out. im not trying to make some race monster, just want it to run right because it is already a big step up from my old shovel.
