Default Hog tunes 160 watt amp question

Does anyone know if you use the 160 watt amp and only have to speaker, will you get 80 watts of power per the 2 speakers?

I think only if the amp has a 2CH/4CH switch on it.

The amp is 40W for 4 channels for a total of 160W. You're asking if the amp can be "bridged" (combining the four channels into two channels) to deliver 80W per channel. As others suggested, ask PEZ at HT. Typically, amps that can be bridged say so in the product literature.

The 2/4 channel switch mentioned by IQ is different than bridging. The switch (in 2 channel mode) tells the amp to take a two channel input and split it into 4 channels. So, for example, if you have a Street Glide with two channel output from the HK radio, the amp will take the two channel input and split it into four channels to drive two pairs of speakers.

Good luck with your research. Let us know what you find out.

I am going to say NO, it will not produce 80w into two speakers simply because it is designed as a four channel amp, with four channel input. The 2/4 channel switch on the amp is to combine the signal so there is no effect from the fader on the stereo. In other words, all four speakers will be front and the fader will have no effect on the amp.

To produce 80w the amp would have to be bridgeable, so it would combine two internal circuits to produce the 80w output, this would in effect connect one positive terminal and one negative terminal, and I am pretty sure the 40/4 amp does not do this.

I could be wrong about the switch on this amp, but I don't think so, if you check with Pez and find I am wrong, please post back so I'll know. Actually though, I have one that just came in the mail Friday, but I am on vacation and haven't seen it yet, but when I get home I do plan on taking it apart and examining it thoroughly, (since this is one of the things I do) so I will know in the next week or so.

For some reason I couldn't get the reply above to post, and have been trying to resolve that, now that I have fixed that, I see that Harleypingman, has already basically stated what I was going to inform you of, so sorry for the duplicate reply, but I concur with him.

Now that I read his reply better though, I will say that I believe he is wrong about the 2/4 channel switch, since the amp is made for the ultra kit, it should be set up for 4 channel input only, (again I could be wrong) since the ultra will have four speakers, and the 2/4 switch is to do away with the fader effect, so that you can use the amp with the front speakers and the lower speakers and then drive the rear speakers through the bypass circuit, and the radio will then have the front and lowers as the front channel and the rears as the rear channel.
