Tire Plugs??
Anyone out there ever plug a tire? Found a wood screw in my rear tire on Saturday and plugged the sucker. Looks fine and doesn't leak - should I replace the tire or trust the plug? Btw, I have done this before on a Honda Shadow I owned 10 years ago and it held fine for the life of the tire.
Ted,
I think the Motor Company says not to run with a plug except in an emergency until you can get a new tire. Not sure what Dunlop has to say about it. I would personally put on a new tire, or at least tube it.
Just an opinion, but tires are not expensive enough for it to be worth the chance of the damage causing a blowout.
Regards,
Bill

I agree with Bill here, I've plugged tires to get home, but most times replaced the tire later. I guess what it comes down to is what price do you put on your life. It would no doubt hold but I feel more secure replacing it. JMHO
I had the same problem a couple of months ago. Brand new tire with a nail. I had the dealer install, (actually they suggested it) a tube in it and its been fine ever since. As long as its not a radial tire, tubes work just fine. Only cost $22.00 for the tube and $20.00 labor.
btw, it was a rear tire.

I would recommend an inside plug/patch. It will hold the life of the tire, without compromise.

Hey,
I just picked up a Stop N Go plug kit at Americade. According to the manufacturer, a plug is a temporary fix. The tire should be repaired as soon as possible.
I've never heard of a plug failing and this may just be a CYA approach by the factory. Please post if you had a personal experience with plugged tires. Pro or Con.
Thanx
John

Not CYA...the plugged area get's hot, real hot by comparison to the rest of the tire and could lead to a blow out. On a cage...maybe not so big of a concern...when you've only got two wheels, little more of a problem.[
