Default 1000 mile Service.

I got my bike back from taking it in for the 1000 mile service. Just figured, under warranty and all I should let them do their thing. Here's the kicker. Get the bike home, after going for a ride, take a look at the trans level. Nothing. It doesn't register on the dipstick. I let it cool down, still nothing on the dipstick. Also, my oil level (cold) is at the full mark. Isn't it supposed to be at halfway? It should be full when hot, correct? Geesh I'm doing this myself on my next oil change. Going to take it in to have them look at this and see what they have to say.

You would think when you take you car, truck, bike or what ever back to the dealer for service it will come back to you with no problems. But they can't fix it if they don't know about the Service Dept. problems...................

Unfortunately this has been my typical experience in the past also.

Get a service manual and do it yourself.

When/if you have to take it in for warranty work, check it over real well and fix whatever they screwed up. That is what I have been doing for years.

Sad state of affairs.

Same thing happened to me. They forgot to grease the neck or check the kick stand bolt and it was loose. Seems like I paid $210.00 for a complete oil change. Never again. I'll do all my own work................

Some of us get it, some of us don't. Just the other day a forum member referred to the dealer techs as "The Pros" and this is why he takes it to them to do the service. LOL Stories like yours are too common.

Make sure and let the dealer know what your issue is. They need to know if one of thier service people is not up to snuff. Some dealers actually do a good job. My dealer does have pros in the service area. Unfortunately this is not true of all dealers.

Buddy of mine got a brand new tranny after he toasted it when the dealer did the same to him. He had a different dealer check it and tell him what the issue was then went to the dealer that messed it up with the paperwork in hand. Not condoning anything, but it can be hectic and mistakes can happen. Do it yourself and take your time and know things are done right.

While it's very true are a lot of nightmare stories out there from some Dealers are also some good ones, My policy is let them do the 1,000 Mile but only with a Dealer I know and trust the wrenches doing the work .. If feel confident doing it your self fine .. But the 1,000 Mile Warranty i feel is probably the most critical one there is if have a bunch of Incompetent Service Personnel, find another Dealer or good indy .. Or grab a manual if sure you wrenching ability can handle it ..

Being a Harley Tech myself I can tell you that a lot of these techs can be lazy and take shortcuts, and also want to come right in on the flat rate so they can make money, which really pisses me off and gives all of us who don't care about flat rate a bad name!
There are good techs out there, most times you should meet the tech and look him in the eye and be up front and have a report with he or she and letting them know that you'll be checking on their work.
I personally will not let a bike out of the shop (when I was working) if its not right and it gets checked over by the service manager and service writer prior to delivery. Some of these shops just get in such a hurry that sometimes they need to realize they are gambling with peoples lives when they do shoddy work. Prior to becoming a tech myself I too suffered the same ineptitute from the dealership service departments, no more of that! I keep giving Harley the benefit of the doubt and they get better since the economy sucks. All I can say is, I do good work and rarely got any returns on the same repair or service order.
