Default Speaker upgrade

I have a Road Glide and at 70 mph the speakers are quiet distorted most of the time. I was at the Myrtle Beach Ralley last week and saw a guy with the new Harley Davidson upgrade speakers on his Road Glide and they sounded great. Of course that was in the parking lot. He assured me that they were a big improvement at speed also. My question, what is the best choice for an upgrade without an amp. So far I'm considering Hogtunes, J&M, and the new Harley speakers. Any suggestions? What are others turning to?

Check out your local car audio installers and see if any of them have done any work on bikes. I got mine done locally with some of the good stuff. JL Audio and Alpine. I would recommend doing this versus the available "motorcycle audio" stuff available.

Almost anything will be an improvement over the stock speakers, however high volume distortion is usually due to lack of amp power. Playing most units at distortion levels will damage the radio AND/OR the speakers.

I can't speak to the other brands, but I recently replaced my front speakers with Hog Tunes. No amp. They're louder, clearer, etc. Worked out well for me. I'd do it again.

I heard a back to back demo of the J&M speakers compared to stock at the River Run last month. A lot louder and clearer without an amp. I did not have the opportunity to hear them while riding but the difference in clarity/volume at the same level on the head unit was quite large.

I concur. Especially for the price they get because it is 'motorcycle' specific.

If you keep the factory radio, and no amp, your options are pretty limited. Infinity makes a decent 2 ohm speaker.

I just put a Kenwood (marine) unit with Infinity Reference speaks in and it has plenty of volume at speeds. I have about $400 into every thing. The deck was a piece of cake to install, and I had to take the OEM speaker rings out, take a dremel to them, and turn them around to get the cone surrounds to clear, but it worked well. They also have directional tweets in them with a 3 db boost switch.

Do you have an amp or did you only add the speakers?
