Default For those that do it your self main.....

I just did my 1k service on my new 2007 SG. Not hard at all....the critical fasteners were the worse or longest part.
Any way my ???? is on the steering head bearings. Manual says to fill till you see grease exude from top and bottom of the neck. Has any one done this. How much of the 14 oz did it take? BTW the manual says 38oz for the primary lube...that is wrong. I could not see it fitting. 32 oz was perfect.

Thanks

Was the bike level, or was it leaning on the jiffy stand?

On the steering head, I don't see this as being a high heat/friction item. I usuallygive it about 2 cranks on the grease gun periodically. No problems yet.

I put almost a whole cartridge of grease in my previous bike, 02 RK, before it oozed out of the steering head. I don't know if they are dry from the factory or what? I used marine grade wheel bearing greese.

That's what I thought. I just put 3/4 of the H-D grease in mine and still nothing. I guess they do ship em dry.
Thanks

I thought I'd look to see how well the dealer did my 1000K service.
What I found was a brand new never-been-greased fitting on the steering head.
I put in a 90 degree fitting in and proceeded to pump about 70 pumps of grease into the steering head before it came out the top and bottom.
I used Valvoline Syntech Synthetic grease for the bearings.
Any grease would probably do , but if it's kinda light , the engine heat will melt the grease out of the bearings and all over the lower fork clamps
and the front of the engine.
I would follow the factory procedure "exactly" for the primary level.
Good wrenching.

If the bike remains on the jiffy stand you can not fully drain the transmission as the pan is tilted to the left. When I did my first service I let it drain fully while on the jiffy stand and then sat on the bike and stood the bike straight up......at which point the remainder of the fluid came out. I can't say exactly how much came out after I straightened the bike but it was a considerable amount, likely the six ounce difference you mention.

Sorry, I just noticed you said 'primary' and not 'transmission'. I have yet to do my primary.

The primary fluid and tranny should be checked level, not on the jiffy stand.
As far as the steering head just keep pumping the grease in till you see it come out.
My '06 was not greased at the dealer during the 1K service.Thats why I do my own service now.

The bearings are greased at the factory, before they are installed in the neck. When we do our routine maintenence using the grease fitting in the neck, we are actually filling up the neck with grease before enough gets to the bearings to force any out. That's why it takes so much, especially the first time.
