I have a 2 day business trip (thur and Fri) to Phoenix, and decided to skip the plane and ride down there instead (like many, looking for any opportunity to ride). I am planning on riding wednesday afternoon. first time I ride to phx. haven't even looked at the map yet. any advice on routes to take or stay away from? I would be leaving phx late Fri or Sat morning, and was thinking of taking couple of day tour before getting back to LA.
If time wasn't an issue, I'd go east to Kingman, AZ and then take 93 into Phoenix. Lots of good desert scenery on 93 that varies with the elevation. Or run further east to Flagstaff, although you never know about the weather this time of year, then head south through Sedona.
If you're in a hurry you might as well hammer/hammer on I-10. I'm certain there a a few locals out there that can steer you to the right roads.
head up to Wikenburg and get on the 89 to Prescott, Sedona, and Flagstaff. I made a big loop last year from LA to Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Phoenix, home. Beautiful country. Definitely do the 89 ALT to Jerome. Great destination for bikes. On the way back, you'll eventually have to do the 40 to the 15 or drop back down to the 10 but it's well worth it.
Dress warm, Flagstaff is a high altitude.
