Default TC 88 cam choice

My 04 EGS is approachin 30,000 miles and i figured i needed to look into the cam chain tensioner and while im in there i would like to change the cams. Its stock other than a K&N air filter, carb tweaked and true duals. What would be a good choice in cams and what else needs replacing? Thanks

With your bike, I would strongly consider gear drive cams. I put an S&S set of 510G gear drive cams in my bike and have been very pleased with them. These are bolt in cams and do not require a change in valve springs. I went with the 510G based on the recommendation of the indy shop that installed the cam. They had done a lot of them with good results.

Now that my 02 RKC is done with the engine work (big bore, stage 2 heads), I am thinking about stepping up to the S&S 570G cams. This is a similar cam to the 510G but with more lift. My stage 2 heads have better springs in them now so I can accomodate the increased lift of the S&S 570G. You could run this cam and I think it would do well, but you'll need new valve springs to do it.

Some folks have really liked the the Andrews 26G for a bolt in touring cam as well. It performs similarly to the S&S 510G. The Andrews 37G is a little bigger cam you would consider if you are planning a big bore with more compression later on. The 37G will be a little softer on the bottom end until you bump the compression.

Bolt in for a TC88 (that is going to stay an 88) the S&S 510G or Andrews 26G are both good gear drive cams that will give you a nice bump in power and get rid of the cam tensioners. You should plan on a set of adjustable push rods and maybe a set of new lifters (if you are the nervous type). I've heard of guys putting new lifters in around the 30K to 50K range in milage. I have not done this on my 02 RKC and really don't plan to as my bike has been nothing but perfect to date with little to no valve train noise.

Good luck.

Do the hydraulic tensioner upgrade and Andrews 26 cams. Best combination out there for an 88 in a heavy bike.

Hydraulic tensioner upgrade and Andrews 21N cam worked great for me.

Where is the best (cheapest) place to buy these parts?

I contacted Andrews about this and following was their reply. Sorry but the PDF attachments are too large to add.

Our 21 cam would be a good choice for a mild cam upgrade in an 88" engine. A complete gear driven cam kit has a suggested retail of 770.00, however I would recommend checking with your local retailers for pricing. Attached are some catalog pages with specs for the 21 in a gear drive version.

The TW26 will harm the low-end on a bike with such a low compression-ratio (8.7 static). I approached Andrews about the 21 and 26 for my 96" motor with 9.2 compression, and they verified my fears with the 26. They also steered me away from the 21 saying it wouldn't make much difference over stock. I ended up with the SE255, which was perfect for me but isn't available for the TC88/95.

Since then they've introduced the TW48, which is available as a conversion cam for the TC88 with a grind very similar to the SE255, and I think that would be the way to go if low-end and midrange is the priority. With that you'd have to buy the hydraulic conversion kit, but for my money either that or the Harley kit would be the way to go regardless of the cam selected. It works very well without the extra noise, expense, and need for a very true crank run-out. The added oil-pump capacity is an upside, too.

+1 on the S&S 510G. Did mine last year at 23000 and couldn't be happier. Brother has the Andrews 21 in his 2000 RK Classic but likes the sound and the way mine pulls my Ultra better than his.

have done 510G on my '04 Ultra and my buddy's '02 road King. Nice, and pipe sounds different after, more like an "Harley"
I was expecting a bigger bump in my *** but i probably have to do more for that...
