Default carb conversion for MM EFI

has anybody done a carb conversion for the MM EFI yet? I love my 99 RK but im getting sick of this system. Since i went to bigger cams and a 2 into 1 it just went south. Maybe it always was crappy and I just didnt notice it till the changes. My local mech did tell me that the MM prefers duals over the header. With the cost of aftermarket EFIs I wonder if a guy would be better off swapping to a carb. Sell off the PCIII, fuel pump, sending unit, induction module and computer to help pay for a kuni. The only other option we discussed was swapping to a Delphi system but that could be spendy too.

Just check the forum tech threads. Saw the thread today for when I "might " need it.

The only choices you have are go carb (tried and true method), go with the Zippers conversion kit (good, but EXPENSIVE), or a Delphi Conversion, (also expenive).

If you want feed back from folks who went carb, go to Harley Tech Talk. At least once every three months someone there goes carb. They have whole threads dedicated to this complete with a listing of parts and step by step instructions.

Good luck

Your local mech is full of crap. Sounds like all you need is someone who knows MM and a good tune on your PCIII.

I have a 2000 with MM FI, it's a 103 with 570 lift cams, P&P heads & TB, & have always run a 2 into 1, currently a FAT CAT. It's got a PC III with a canned map, I planned on doing a tune but it runs good & gets good mileage, 37-47 MPG depending on throttle position. I've got over 75K on this combo with no real problems, so somebody isn't doing something right. The MM system gets a bad rep since it was the first FI available on Harleys & most techs back then didn't want to change away from carbs & learn how to make them work right. I have thought about a conversion also if I come down to major parts failures since replacement parts are pricey, but for now I'm happy with my MM. I regularly ride with a guy with a dead stock 08 FLHTC 96 & I'm always getting 3-5 MPGs better than he does, not bad.

I made this post awhile back after I discovered that cams had been installed but no upgrade to the EFI. to my 2000 Ultra. What makes it bad is very few people out there want to deal with MM. I discovered right about that same time Cobra was getting to release a new "self mapping/adjusting" Tuner. Turns out they didn't forget about us slightly older bikes.

The Cobra Fi2000 PowrPro Tuner SKU:692-1600AT.

If you read up on it no matter what upgrade you do the Tuner can adjust without remapping , from the site they are 600$ but around here thats a trip to the Dyno and mapping.

ive been playing with various maps i pulled of the net. Im waiting for one to be sent to me tailor made for my bike but until it gets here i was trying different ones. I found one for an 88" with 26g cams, SE air cleaner and Fat cat 2:1 that made a world of difference but still isnt perfect. Im starting to wonder if the previous owner didnt get a download for the computer. All the maps ive been getting are for a stock ECU.

Im running an 88" with V&H pro pipe and 21n cams with a SE air cleaner

I know people over here in the UK who are ace with MM EFi. Sounds as if you need to ask around your locality to find someone who is better informed and competent. Best of luck! There are hundreds of thousands of Harley owners out there with MM bikes who don't know they might have a problem.....
