Many folks, like myself, ride lots of miles for many years without having any accidents and without having to do any "emergency braking". In that scenario, it's easy to get a false sense of security that you can control a bike in an "emergency braking" situation. Then, you get to find out, like myself, that when you do have to do an "instinctive" emergency braking maneuver, it's much more difficult than you think...in fact, you may find out, like me, that you can end up on the ground in a hurry. This happened to me after 23 years of accident-free riding. The bike was fixed and the road rash healed but the memory remains. Now, 2 years later when I decided to buy a new Ultra Classic, I didn't even consider getting it without ABS. Seeing the DVD that comes with the ABS-equipped bikes would make you a believer.
If you have to really get on the brakes, it's very difficult not to lock either or both wheels. If you do lock either or both wheels, the odds are great that you're going down. ABS will prevent that lock-up and will get you stopped in a hurry. It's not the answer for lack of riding skills but it could very well save your butt in an emergency situation. I feel much better knowing that the bike I ride has ABS.
