I did the same thing and I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I have a great seat and both backrests, but she's already after me for the Pak with armrests, etc...

The thing I like about the Standard is that I can give it whatever look I want. I'm trying to set it up so that I can switch back and forth from Street Glide look to Desser look and other looks in between. I plan on keeping it a long time, so I'm going slow and waiting to do only those things that will take me in the direction I want to go. I'm also trying to stay as reminiscent of an "old school" look as is possible with an '05. I'll get there eventually. Should be a fun trip. I'm not envious of my riding buddies who have the full blown Ultras. I'll wind up a little more flexible, I think.

I admit, if I'd had the scratch when I was ready to buy, I'd probably have gone with the Ultra, but I think I have a good plan and I'll see where it takes me.

i really like my standard, with the detachable sissy bar i can go from the badlander to the 'poofy' seat in under 5 minutes. i don't have the radio, i still like listening to the motor. the wife and i put 8500 miles on this summer.

I wanted a std with a chrome/black engine. I started adding up the prices of accesories and bought the Ultra. It has all the bells and whistles and you can take stuff off a lot cheaper than you can add it on.

I looked at buying a standard as well but decided on the SG because I like the black and chrome motor and the cleaner overall looks of the SG a little more. If I did go with a Standard, the first thing I would do is the get the chrome package for the engine. The aluminum stuff doesn't do it for me.

I agree, get the Classic and take off what you don't want. The Lowering shocks will give you the SG look and you can make the tour pak removable. You'll be dollars ahead.

Bryan , I love my EG Standard.
I even bought the '06 because it had a carb. (really easy to tune and work on)
Didn't want a radio , I like the stock seat , I'm not into chrome , didn't want a tour pack.
I got the "essentials kit" which had the front docking kit , sissy bar , and luggage rack.
My wife likes the rear seat , and everyones happy.
Gotta go with what you want/need in a bike.
I also think the standard is the best value in a Harley of any kind.
Just my opinion.

I wouldnt get a classic or ultra! I like the clean look of the standard. I installed hardware for detachable luggage rack and passenger backrest. I also installed a sony marine stereo with am/fm/cd/mp3 and xm ready. I did have to design and fabricate my own mounting brackets, and a cover made from clear unbreakable plexiglass-like material. But I like building stuff! And it cost less than half of HD stereo. It all depends on what you want. Different strokes for different folks!

I chose the Classic for the passenger comfort and luggage capacity. The Standard is the best bang for the buck Glide but lacked what I would only wind up adding on later, and I like the look of the black powder coated engine. The Ultra has everything but I just prefer the cleaner look of the Classic. Besides, I really had no desire for all the bells and whistles anyway. Sound system? I could care less. I barely use the radio on my Classic. I prefer the music of the SE slipons.

Go for the Ultra-Classic CVO totally loaded. You will be ahead of the game, just wait until the '08's hit and buy then. You get the advantage of having next years model '08 before that year arrives, and all the changes that were problematic for the '07's corrected and the value will stay up better until next year of course!

And I can tell you from personal experiance, if you want to build your bike to the next model, its going to cost!!!

I guess I'm an oddball!! I really prefer the silver engine, and I could care less about chrome. I love my standard!!!
