I was cleaning my stock windshield yesterday after a ride, with Plexus and as I picked off some stuck on bug guts I noticed my windshield was peeling. Anyone else have this happen too?
Wow never heard of this, I'll be watching this thread... I assume you just wash with soap n water or just common methods? Is is like a thin layer that's peeling from the edges or from a chip in the middle of the windscreen?
Harley shields are hard coated polycarbonate. The acid in bugs will attack the coating if left on too long. We've all seen bugs left on a fairing etch the paint. Same thing happens to the hard coating. Scraping off a dried bug that's been on a long time is almost guaranteed to lift the coating. Looks like peeling skin after a sun burn. If you've left the bugs on too long try leaving a wet towel over the area until the critters are soft enough to wipe off. You may get lucky. The best thing to do is treat the shield like your paint, use a little detail spray after each ride and get them off before they do damage.
It's a common problem.
The shields are coated with the same stuff they use on let's say headlights from our cars.
Sometimes the coating comes of like La Vic said due to dried bugs or chips.
I own a bodyshop and we've repaired several damaged headlights with scratches or damaged coating. The procedure for repair is standard:
Sanding of the complete surface, polishing, thin level of plastic primer, spray with a clearcoat in the sprayboot and heat up.
It looks awful when you see a sanded shield, it becomes completely matt. The matte finish just disappears with the clearcoat.
I have had a couple of stock windshields peel/pit. I do not use rain-x on them, but don't always get those bugs off right away. I replaced mine with clearview and am very happy with the clearview shields.
