I was goingto take my Tour Pak of the Ultra, but wanted to retain the CB. When I lifted the liner out of the Tour Pak, I saw a large metal plate that the CB is attached to. Ground Plane I guess. Anyboby know what the CB would be like with out the Tour Pak and that large metal plate????
That large metal plate is in all tour paks. It is for stringth. There is a coil that is under the tour pak that is part of the ultra cb antenna. The steel plate should have nothing to do with it.
If you do remove the tour pak, you still need to ground the CB antenna you replace the original with. It uses the metal of the motorcycle to reflect signal strength. Most mounts will accomplish this. I would use a 48" top load fiberglass whip for best performance. Shorty antennas work ok close in. I have a 18" base loaded mounted in place of the factory whip which also utilizes the coil in the tour pak. It has about 3/4 mile range. Hope this helps.
Is the Harley-Davidson Touring model CB Antenna loading coil an NGP design since the center conductor and shield are shorted together at the loading coil in the tour pak? Are the H-D CB antennas NGP type as well? See pics of loading coil with the plastic cover removed.
I would go with a J&M hidden antenna. Goes inside the fairing. I just put one on my Road Glide. Works for me. Going this route you would never have to mess with it again. Serria MC has about the best price
rhinoevans, what year is your HD? Both 76340-98 and 76415-06 kits do not use the Tour Pak loading coil, even when the Harley Accessory Catolog shows it. It is on the bottom of the antenna (76344-98 loading coil).
Just make sure you get the "Frame Mounted" Antenna Kit when purchasing it. They mount to the rails.
76410-09 Fits '09-later FLHX, FLTR and FLTRX models. Does not fit FLHXSE and FLTRSE models. Includes Fiberglass CB Antenna P/N 76250-09.
76415-06 This kit fits 2006 and 2008 FLHT (Electra GlideŽ), FLHTC (Electra Glide Classic), FLHX (Street GlideTM) and FLTR (Road GlideŽ) model motorcycles.
76340-98 This antenna kit is designed for use on 1998 -2008 FLTR/I models with radio upgrade and CB Intercom kit, Part No. 76331-98. Not for use on models equipped with Tour-Paks.
If you plan to use a Detach Kit on your Toiur Pak, think about a hidden Antenna, or you can use the Antenna Relocation Kit. I did for a while. But the antenna made putting the Pak on and off a PITA. So I moved both AM/FM and CB antennas inside the fairing.
Numbers are 76556-09 for '09/later and 76326-00A for '97-'08.

Just how good does that work? Have you really tested it for distance?
