Default How low can you go,,,,,safely?

So I just got my 08 SG last week and the wife loves it and wants one of her own

But she's only 5'2 so short legs are an issue with many bikes

Her star 650 is lowered 1.5 so that is about a 26 inch seat height and she is totally fine on it, no trouble with balance, handling or anything

But on my SG she's on her tippy toes at best and I need her to be flat footed

So what's the low settings for a SG, what kit gets it into her comfort zone

for her i would stay with an 07 or older 08 has 6 gallon tank its a little wider 09 new frame wider and taller.i know a small girl on one shes lowered it 1 inch front and rear, and had the seat reshaped, she is not an aggresive rider so lean angle isnt an issuie for her but her bike will bottom fairly easy.

If she is only 5'2" she really needs to think about a Deluxe. Touring bikes are too tall for her plus a higher CG. Put a fairing on a Deluxe for a little more comfort.

SG's are already too low imo. Best bet is a lower seal and thicker soles.

Have an 06 SG. Lowered the back end 1" and the front 1". I have no problems wtih bottoming out at 5 psi (and I ride some bumpy roads). Might need to have someone re-do the seat too.

This system will get you a 3 inch drop while keeping the stock suspension. It can only be installed at HD dealers that are set up and trained to do the job. Not many are set up to do this yet, but I know that Kutter HD in Janesville, WI is.

A friend at work with short legs went with this system on his 2010 SG and LOVE's it.

That drop seat kit is available form Fat Baggers actually. http://store.fatbaggers.com/drsekitop.html

Don't know anyhting about H-D dealers being required to do the work. That may just be that dealer re-selling thier kit.

Safety first. You can get the kit for lowering the seat, an older model, progressive shocks, but the best bet is to take her to the local stealer and sit on a few different bikes to see what "fits" her. These days they generally have a selection of used too, with whatever mods, so maybe you'd luck out and find one that has been lowered that she could try. Haven't heard anything about the "fit shop" that HD talks about, but if its anything like the dealer where I bought my bike, it's more a "sell as many options as you can" shop.

thanks for the comments and advice folks, I appreciate all of it,

As for a deluxe, she hates the look of that bike

we've sat on quite a few, in fact a couple that rides with us, her bike is a Heritage and it's dropped 3 and 2 and fits her perfectly - I just wasn't sure if the touring bikes had that option as well.

I need to check into the progessive shocks things for the front end, and we already knew there would be some seat modifications needed and have a place in daytona that does that as part of making a bike "girl friendly" they dropped her vstar when we bought it.

I know she needs more miles under her belt before we switch bikes for her, but I just wanted to start doing some homework ahead of time to know what we can or cannot do when the time comes.

bogieb - thanks for the info - I bet a 1, 1 drop and some custom seat work is going to work well for her
