Mick,

Thanks! That info is a good help. I have no idea what work was done when the pipes were put on. I expected to be able to clean things up and have it running the way it was before it sat. I will pull the carb and see what is in there for a pilot jet and go from there.

Neil, You've received some good advice in the posts above. Let me add my 2 cents also. Since you said you cleaned the carb very well, I assume you removed the idle mixture screw and cleaned that passage thoroughly. When you reinstalled the mixture screw you put the spring, washer and O-ring back in proper order. I have found that that O-ring gets scuffed up very easily. Once that O-ring is buggered up it's sometimes hard to get the idle circuit to work properly. These guys will sell you a new kit with the spring, washer, and O-ring for just a few bucks.

They also have the jets you need and several other goodies for rebuilding the CV. My sportster behaved just like the bike you are working on. I thought it was jetted too lean and tried to compensate by going to larger jets and got nowhere. It wasn't until I retraced all my work and addressed that idle circuit that I got it dialed in. Runs like a bear now. Good luck with it.

If it ran well before I would either replace the pilot or buy a jet reamer. I have run a 48 pilot on an 88" motor with good results. Along with a Sporty needle. Most engines will be OK with a 46 but some need the 48. They all seem to be a little different even when stock.
