Default Learned something yesterday

I learned that when your shift linkage falls apart and you don't know it then you try to down shift as your slowing down and nothing happens that your heart rate goes up and so does your blood pressure.

that stock linkage is a WEAK part of the HD - been there and done that - I tell everyone to ditch that stock POS and get a nice set up - most don't listen and someday will experence what you just did.... I carry a spare stock part in my pac to help people like you out - $5 part but if you don't have it on the road - your stuck... I aways pay it forward...

Which is exactly the reason that in addition to a really complete tool kit, I now carry a set of Allens, both wrenches and sockets in a really complete tool set!

Mine came apart at a location called "Lovers Leap" on Rt 58 in Hillsville, Va. on the way to Ohio.

Since I'm ready now, it's never come apart again!

Hope you got out of your situation without too much trouble!

It's an easy fix with wire zip ties to get you home. I always replce the goofy stock ones with heim joints and shoulder screws with in the first week of getting a bike..

You can get 5/16" stainless spherical bearing rod ends at Mc Master Carr for about $12.00 each, that will thread onto your OEM linkage rod. Plenty strong, and you can polish them by hand to shine like chrome in about 12 beers.

Aircraft safety wire! I carry a length of it with me all the time.

My wife got me a kit for Christmas last year and I added a few more things to it and have had it with me at all times since and had more than one opportunity to use it too.

I will look into that. I got a new stock one because I only had 20 bucks on me. I was a little sticker shocked at how much the after market ones are but I am going to do something different there. It also explains why my shifting had been so sloppy lately too.

I see!
Mine's an older Screaming Eagle which came with the stainless Shift Rod ( with the good heim joints.) Where mine came apart is that little allen screw at the bottom of your pic that holds the lever onto the splined shaft. On mine it just got loose and fell off.

Fortunately the little auto service shop DOWN the hill was just opening, and they lent me the allen wrench to tighten mine back up.
