I recently purchased an Ultracool and I'm about ready to begin the installation so I can get some riding with it before I take off on a fairly long trip just to make sure it's solid.
Anyway, as I was looking over the installation directions it shows disconnecting the clutch cable to reroute it behind the frame to mount the cooler. Has anyone had any luck with just pushing the cable upward to avoid disconnecting it when installing this? I'm trying to avoid having to adjust the clutch cable as I don't have a shop manual to help me out with that. Input on this would be great...or maybe the clutch adjustment is really simple and someone could help me out with that.
Clutch adjustment is really easy. just pull the boot down, break the jamnut loose colapse the cable all the way and then go to the lever pull the pin remove the cable. to replace adjust the cable back to where it was!
Burninator, you can make a mark on the adjuster with a sharpie pin or just measure the length of the threads showing & put it back there. What your looking for is aprox. 1/8 inch of free play at the end of your clutch lever when properly adjusted. Its very simple, dont be intimidated. I did that same install a few weeks ago.

Just pull the ring pin on the underside of the clutch lever? What did you use to pull that?

Yes that is a snapring its best to use snapring pliers, be careful and make sure you have a finger on it or else you will be looking for all night you can use two small srewdrivers but i suggest the pliers!!
Thanks for the help guys...disconnected the clutch cable no problem with your instructions and it was much easier than I anticipated...guess I was just intimidated by it! I got through the part about cutting the frame bolts and then realized I was missing the brackets....so yeah....disabled Harley now until I can get the missing parts...guess it's just not my night :-/
I love my UltraCool oil cooler. It gets lots of looks and attention. And it actually cools the oil while you are stuck in traffic. I have been using the Ultra Cool for over a year and a half. I have done mods which have required me to R&R it a couple of times and I have found three crucial things to watch for. The bottom hose clamp is takes a lot of care to get on correctly. If you aren't exacting with it, the line will blow. First hand knowledge of that one. I found that sliding the clamp on first and then installing the hose allowed the clamp to get completely behind the thermostat unit for a sure fit. Another problem is the hose itself. I could not get a clean bend without some crimping. I contacted Ultra Cool and they sent me molded hoses at no charge. Finally, it is easy to over torque the bottom cover bolts. So far, mine has survived but I will probably replace it this winter. As for the clutch cable; when I was running the stock cable I bought the billet clutch cable clamp (HD part #91252-03 or 91249-04) and modified it to mount directly in the frame cross brace. I cut on half of it at an angle so the other half would wrap around behind the brace and the front half was flush with the flat side of the brace. You could not tell it wasn't made that way. I have since installed a Diamond Back cable and raised the clamp up above the brace just under the weld for the backbone and downtube bracing. No modifications required for the clamp there. Between the oil cooler and the oxygen sensor I installed, there was no way to run the cable behind the frame. I am in the stock location and it looks better this way. Cable adjustment should be between 1/8" and 3/16" between the cable hossle (the round metal part that goes into the housing) and the housing itself. Release the lever and try to pull the cable housing straight out of the handle housing and measure the gap between.

Thanks for the tips! I believe mine came with the molded oil hoses already...and I'll certainly look out for the other potential issues! Now that I'm past what I thought was gonna be the toughest part of the job, I'm frustrated that I can't complete the install because of the missing brackets! I really should have checked to make sure it was all there before I started the install!
