Question about the SE Stage 1 kit: I bought my bike used with an SE filter (round KandN type). Turns out the guy I bought it from just slapped on the filter, but didn't buy the complete SE stage 1 kit with backplate and channels to collect oil blowback. I've noticed some oil in the filter recently...not sure if this could be why?
Anyway I'd appreciate any advice on whether or not I need to buy the complete SE stage 1 kit. Thanks!
What year model bike do you have? This kit changed for the '08 and newer touring models, and for these newer models the rubber vent "plugs" have been omitted in favor of bolts that are hollow and channel oil through vents built into the backing plate.
Your filter may be picking up some oil from the crankcase being overfilled slightly. Many of us have noticed that when overfilled, more oil blows through the vent and overwhelms the ability for the backing plate to pull it through the venturi. In those cases, the bottom of the filter will get saturated and eventually drip oil.
Oh, I see... maybe I am confused. If you have the round filter, but it's not mounted, then you will need several items: the backing plate, hollow bolts for mounting the backing plate, three studs for mounting the filter to the backing plate, and some washers and O-rings. Even though you have the filter, you'll probably be better off to purchase the entire kit (29260-08) which includes a filter. I don't think that just the backplate kit contains all the other hardware you'll need.
if you have the round filter mounted you already have the backplate or it would not work. might be a different brand but if are using a K&N se style round filter you have a backing plate already
Absolutely, ShortRide! Looks like you have the new style that has the hollow bolts that fasten the backplate to the cylinders. The old style had black rubber caps that fit over a different style of bolt; those caps provided the venting. The new style has a channel that runs from the hollow bolt to a point inside the backing plate.
Looks like you have the HD washable air filter that comes with the kit vs the K&N red oiled version. Either will fit the backing plate perfectly. The new style has a different K&N part number that has a different bolt hole pattern.
