Default Another Fork oil question

Hey every one I have a couple of question about my front forks. I just bought a 2002 EGS with 34k on it and was taking it to the dmv for the license and title change. I went over some RR tracks about 25 or 30 mph and my forks bottomed out hard. They are chrome so I don't know when they were changed out. But if the oil was old or low and I replaced it with the se heavy oil would that keep it from bottoming out? ( I have been searching the forum and read what I could find on changing the oil including iclicks write up but haven't found anything about bottoming out problems) Also I am assuming since the forks have been changed and there is a drain screw on both sides I need not worry about the cartridge.

PS I have been reading and gleaning information on this web site for several years. I started out on the softtail side but I just wanted to say this is a great website with great info. and I might add some really funny guys.
Thanks in advance

Do you know if the front has been lowered? Either way they've been apart to do the chrome lowers. I would pull them to verify if they have been lowered and serviced properly, then reassemble with the correct amount and type of fluid.

The only problem is that the 02 has the cartridge in theone leg and that complicates service work. Iclick's method is for the newer models that do not have the cartridge. I am running into similar issues because I want to upgrade etc... but do not want to have to deal with the cartidge. If the chrome lowers were installed when new the fluid may need to be replaced. Good luck.

Also it would be a good idea to measure the amount of oil that comes out of each leg to help trouble shoot.

That is one of my questions. Since they have been replace and there is a oil drain plug on both sides, am I correct to assume there isn't a cartridge?

Another good reson to take them apart, Maybe they have already been converted to damper rods on both sides, which is the direction I would take it if its not already there. For a very good front end, convert to damper rods both sides, Intiminators, with single rate springs matched to your weight. This will give you a really nice front end without spending thousand$.

I remember seeing where someone did convert the left fork to be like the right (maybe Maineultraclassic). Even included a parts list. I was thinking of doing that myself sometime in the future.
