Any Ideas on a 7 to 10 day ride from the Chicago area? Maybe north?

What time of year? I live in northeastern WI and have always wanted to do the around Lake Michigan trip. Remember that MI has a helmet law....

Head to Michigan. Frankenmuth is a year round Christmas town that is always a great time.
From there head north to Macinaw city and ride over the bridge. Spend a day on Mackinaw Island.

Just an idea.

Are you sure you want to go north? Ever follow the Illinois river? Out to the Hennepin canal? Indiana for the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg museum followed by the James Dean museum, after which you could do the Parke county covered bridges, come back up the Illinois side through Amish country, etc. If you really want north, go up to highway 2 for Lake Superior's south shore. Ashland's a nice town. You can either go up 90/94/53 (not IL53) and pick 2 up just south of Superior/Duluth and then head east, or 41 or 45 or 51 and pick up 2 at Hurley then head west. If you don't bring a lid, the 41/45 are out. Back to the 1st, stay on 53 until you cross into Duluth, then take hwy61 up Superior's north shore up to the Canadian border. The Grand Portage casino had the freshest Walleye-n-eggs I ever had! Plan on a 20 degree drop in air temp close to Lake Superior, froze my *** off once in July! 40 degrees! 2 miles away from the lake, 85 degrees! D-Kay

I think if it were me and especially this time of year I would be heading south. Take a trip down to Birmingham, Alabama and check out the Barber Motorsports Museum close to a 1000 motorcycles on display here's a link www.barbermuseum.org

I rode down there in Sept. with some friends from VA it was a really cool place!!!

*****, then heading up to Superior is the way to go. Between Superior and Ashland, you can detour up to Bayfield. The Apostle Islands are breathtaking! If you do the west leg first, the northwoods supper clubs around Heyward (Muskie Country) can't be beat. If you look at a HOG atlas, there's plenty of dealers along the route. Our last time up there, we needed a quart of oil by the time we hit Rice Lake, It was hot! The Eau Claire bypass wasn't there then, stop-n-go was a b*tch!

Greetings neighbor ***** , welcome to HDFORUMS . I,m about 40 miles west of you .

Circling Lake Mich. is a good idea , did just that myself this summer . I did it in 3 days but I've seen so much of the coastline already over the years. You could easily spend a week or more to see the sites . Wife likes the lighthouses and some you can tour inside .
Door county ( Wis. ) a couple of days , Mac city couple days ( visit the soo locks ) Travis city ( sleeping bear dunes area)Petosky( don't forget to get a Petosky rock ) , Grand Haven .
Theres a ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon and also Manotawac to Ludington ( been on the latter ferry ) or take your chances with
chicago traffic ( roadwork backups ect.)done that route also .

I here the Huron side is also scenic but havn't tried that yet .

Or stay on Hwy 64 out to Savanna ,Il. and follow the river road north or cross the Savanna bridge and take the Iowa side up , or crisscross back and forth ( Iv'e done that a bilion times over the years ,mixing a few county roads in now and then , never get tired of it) .

Or Sturgis is only 2 days away lots of scenic riding in that area .

Have you taken the ferry accross Michigan on the bike. It is pretty cool.

I love the north side of Lake Superior, and would say to cross the bridge at Macinaw, follow the lake west, and cross back into the States in Thunderbay, ride to Duluth, Milwalkee and then home. The north shore of Superior is some of the best riding I have ever done.

Even more good suggestions, almost makes you want to extend the trip. Higher Gear's choice of 64 (North ave.) straight west is a scenic road but suffered from excessive frost heaves last year, you might want to stick with 20 and hook a left at 84 into Savanna. North of Hannover, the asphalt was shredded in July. Should be long finished by now. North of Dubuque on the Iowa (high) side, the views of the Big Muddy are spectacular. You can go through Prairie Du Chien and follow the Wisconsin river up to the Hayward lakes area, etc. Many more suggestions, but writing a book isn't what you asked for. Enjoy whichever you pick.
