Default 4" Speaker Options

I recently replaced my cluncky stock cassette deck in my 94 FLHTC with a Sony CDX-740 plus Sirius modules. My next step is to replace the stock crappy 4" fairing and 4" rear pod speakers. What are my options for the best speakers. It doesn't look like I can adapt anything larger in either. I have see some J&M and a couple others but not sure which way to go. Thanks, Bear

At some point in the mid- to late- '90's, HD switched to 5.25" speakers that use an adapter ring to mount the speaker to the inner fairing. Whether HD changed the inner fairing to do so, I don't know.

You could call Biketronics since they offer kits for bikes your age, and they may know whether you can use 5.25" speakers or larger on your bike.

You could also go to the local HD store and check the parts books for your model year with those of '97 and newer models to see if the inner fairing p/n changed when HD began using the 5.25" speakers with the adapter rings; if not, you could simply buy the HD adapter rings for 5.25" speakers or buy aftermarket adapter rings to use 6.5" speakers.

As for the speakers in the tour pak pods, I can't offer any suggestions.
There are aftermarket vendors of 4" speakers that would work; but, I'm not sure how you could adapt larger speakers in the pods.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

I just sold my 95 ultra but I bought 4" Polk speakers on ebay for around $45.00 a pair. They were a definite improvement but you can only get so much sound out of a 4" speaker. I think they were db401. Whatever you buy, make sure they are spaced out enough so that the butyl rubber doesn't get squashed when you mount them.
