My wife has MS and she has one of these polarvest that use the ice packs to keep cool. It last for several hours without changing packs and isn't effected by the humidity too much. Of course, it cost a hundred bucks also. But it is another option. Heres a link.
Just finished a week long ride that included riding through the Nevada desert and with the temps up around 95-100 the vest was amazing. Had to dip it in a sink about every 2 to 3 hrs but I was astonished at how comfortable it made riding in the heat. I found it dried completely after hanging it up in the hotel room at the end of the day or was already dry by the time I stopped for the night.

I don't ride though many deserts, but once on a trip out west in July I got an old white long sleeved dress shirt and kept it soaked. It seemed to work ok.
Made a run up to the Texas Hill Country this weekend were temps were 95 to 100F. Happened across this place that had these cooling vest and had been thinking about getting one. $31 well spent, this vest wieghs in at just a few ounces but soaks up enough water to feel like 10 pounds. Hot turned to cool when I got up to speed. Within 2 hours vest was feeling light again and ready for another soaking.
I had a cooling vest that resembled a down jacket except with cooling cystals instead of down. It was big and bulky and dried out pretty quickly. I ended up buying the Harley version from a clearance rack for 25.00 at a local dealer. This was marked down to 45.00, then to 25.00. A good deal I think.
This vest is light light light. It compresses easily and takes up 0 room in my tour pak. I put it in a sink filled with water. It was funny to see that thing suck up all the water from the sink. Like others posters stated, it was a lot heavier. I tend to squeeze out excess water as I don't like my clothes soaked.
The vest in fact made me much cooler. And it lasted a long, long time without being covered by my club vest. The wind dried out the outer fabric but the inner fabric was still damp and cool. It is suggested that you put a tee-shirt on, then the cooling vest on then another piece of clothing like a leather vest to keep the cooling vest from drying out too quickly. I am here to say that the vest was still damp when I hung it up that evening. I will be going on a big club ride tomorrow and will wear it under my club vest. I am sure it will be great. I don't think the value is there for 55.00 retail. But 25.00 seemed pretty good. And like all clothing (seemingly) from HD, this vest is made in China.
Just went on a ride last weekend here in AZ and it was 110 degrees. On the advice of a friend I wore my mesh jacket over my cool vest and stayed cool for about 2 hours plus I bought one of those towels from Lowe's that you get wet wring out and snap it works good to. I put it under my helmet and it kept my head and neck cool.
My brother just bought the Hog Cooler style vest and that damn thing is like riding around in air conditioning! Couldn't believe how cool the vest was with ice water being pumped through it! They are not cheap and you have to have a place for the ice chest to set but damn they work good. Since his wife very seldom rides he just straps it to the passenger seat, plugs it into the fairing, plugs the vest into the ice chest and instant AC...lol... I want one now!
I wear a MiraCool neck bandana - soak it and tie it around my neck - it cools the blood flowing in the arteries in the neck, which then reach the rest of the body. amazingly simple and effective.
POS--stays damp for 2 days. can not dry it out overnight in motel room. only keeps you cool for about 2 hours...the rest of the day you are just wet. must weigh about 20 pounds--wish harley would admit they made a mistake and give me my money back. headed to sturgis from south texas and wishng for something to keep me cool.. i will not be wearing the crappy h-d hydration vest...total waste of money.
Mine works great. Picked it up in Scottsdale Arizona in June and made riding in the heat a piece of cake. Keep it in a Ziploc bag when not wearing it. Worked great all the way home when it was needed. wish I bought it years ago.
