Default 2009 FLHTCU CLutch Issue

2009 Electra Glide Ultra Classic
50,000

When in first and starting from a stop, the friction point is difficult to achieve and hold, RPMs shoot up and down and bike jolts....

I am guessing my clutch is on its last leg.

Question....

What all do I need to rebuild the clutch? Just metal and friction plates?
Do I need a whole new clutch?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks.

Is 50,000 miles normal for a clutch replacement?

I don't have to worry about it for a while. I can get enough miles on mine to wear anything out. It's all been electrical issues on my '09 FLHTCU.

The clutch grabbing sounds more like an adjustment to me. How far off the bar is the lever when the clutch starts to engage? I had my clutch adjusted and it was engaging almost as soon as I started letting out on the lever. I readjusted the clutch pack and cable and it's much better.....I'm getting an up and down surge when starting from a stop in 1st gear. My problem isn't the clutch, it's the motor speeding up and slowing down with a constant throttle position. The throttle is mostly OK while idling but when I put a slight load on it as I release the clutch lever to start going, it wants to slow down then speed up. As you know, a power loss at that slow speed especially when turning from a stop can get tricky. I think I'm going to spray some carb cleaner into my throttle body and clean it up real good to see if that helps.

At 50k your clutch should still be fine. Check your fluid level and your adjustment.

Smithbrl,

That problem sounds like mine. I will have the clutch adjusted and use some fuel cleaner.. maybe that is the issue.

I will also tighten my throttle grip a bit.

My clutch releases right when I start the pull.

Thanks.

For those reading, I would still love to get info on clutch replacements.

Thanks.

Yes, friction plates and ( maybe,) steel discs. but as said earlier, the clutch adjustment done on the primary side is critical, and pretty simple to do in about 10 minutes.

No sense in wasting money...

I don't know if it's the same problem but, my 2009 Ultra acted like that also, turn out the compesator sprocket was bad. had it replaced and clutch is smooth, no jerking, pulls nice from low RPM without clutch chatter, Hope this helps.

If the clutch has been slipped a lot, it could be worn out. Usually its just the friction plates, but if it has been slipped to the point of overheating it, then the steel plates will be bowed and need changed too. Like the others said, try the full adjustment, of both the clutch hub and cable first.

I doubt it is my compensator, mine went out a couple years back and was replaced with a screamin eagle. Supposedly, the SE version is 7x stronger. And the bike isnt acting like it did when my comp went out.

I will adjust the clutch and go from there.

Thanks for the input/.
