Default Sturgis Newbie

Finally making the pilgrimage this year to Sturgis for the first time, won't be going without an escort however, will be making the trip with an old service buddy who has attended several Sturgis rallies and we'll be staying out at the Broken Spoke, both "ball and chains" will be in tow. Any pearls of wisdom you all would like to pass along like: "I wish I had known...", "Shoulda left that at home...or I wish I had brought", "You don't want to miss..." or the proverbial "Never {blank} in Sturgis..."
We plan on staying the whole week Sunday to Sunday, I must say I can hardly wait to hit the road...

I've been there twice 2002 and 2005, went to all the big bars and bands, product shops and displays, also did the Spear Fish and Needles runs. But the coolest parts for me was the ride and all the different people and bikes, everyone from A-Z and not any 2 bikes alike. The bikes just keep roll'in...dosen't matter if its 2:00 PM or 2:00 AM ! They had food booths on the streets that made Great food ! We felt very safe with alot of squad cars crusing and security that looked like they found every Knuckle Dragger from the State running in groups of 3 with blue shirts on. And alot of good look'in women ! As stated previously bring lots of money and credit cards. ( I think this is similar to were all good bikers go when they die ).

Spend MOST of your time exploring the Black Hills. Plenty of riding, scenery and definitely a lot cooler than in town!

If you're shopping for stuff, don't buy the 1st item ya see...walk around a bit first, cuz you'll likely find the same item elsewhere for less. Bartering still works, despite what some may say.

T-shirts (yes, you will end up buying a few): Typically 3 for $30; check the shirt quality. Some are made with cheap cotton (ie, thin)...some are Beefy-T's and will last longer.

Definitely have a burger at the Sugar Shack; great burger!!

+1 on the Sugar Shack -excellent burgers. Stayed at Trout Haven last year during Kool Deadwood Nights and had some great food at the Sugar Shack. Another +1 on exploring the Hills - you can get drunk anytime at home - partying is great but you'll have a blast riding the Hills - spend your time riding and seeing the sights - ride during the mornings and evenings when its cool and spend the time when its hot in town having a beer or two and ride a lil in the evenings. Plenty of fun out there just keep your nose clean and make er back in 1 piece.

I learned last year that their traffic laws are very unusual. For instance, I was told that they are a "two foot state" meaning that you have to put "two feet" down at a stop or they might stop you. Now this goes against all that I have been taught and teach in motor school. I can come to a stop, look both ways and if safe proceed without putting a foot down. They go a bit overboard with some of their enforcement! Mind you, I am a LEO and understand the law and order they are trying to enforce, but, it was a bit much.

Keeping that in mind; under armour shirts are HIGHLY recommended!! SUN SCREEN!! Rain suit! CAMERA!! It was one of the best experiences I have had. The riding was amazing. I hope to get out there again in the next few years. Enjoy!
