I'm currently in the market for a new to me HD. I've been looking at the flhx and the flhr. The stealer down here does the local PD's bikes and has lots of them for sale. I'm currently looking at a 2010 RK police bike with 4800 miles. The dealer said he would throw in a 2-up seat on the bike and a windshield as this bike did not have one. I have a trade in that I'm pretty upside down... around 2k. I've talked them down to 15k otd with the extra's. Does this sound like a good deal or is there a better deal out there that I should keep looking for? The asking price started out at 14995. So I did some talking to get them down to 15k with my trade. My wife also works at this dealership so i'm getting a little employee pricing but it doesnt seem like alot. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sound better than some around here. I have seen 08s and 9s straight up stripped of all the police gear with 7 to 10 k miles for 14,999. If you get a new windshield and seat, I'd say deal.
Beware of wiring gremlins in police bikes, I've had friends with alot of problems with them from all the police equipment that has been removed. What's the trade in that you have? You if your that upside down on it it may be worth just putting the 2 grand you would lose out on into go fast goodies....
My first Harley was a police bike. I guess it depends on who does the de-copping. I had no electrical problems with mine. I'd say go for that deal. Sounds like they're trying to cut you a break.
my trade in is an 07 yamaha v star 1300. It doesnt even have 3k miles on it yet. I've tried selling it out right but no one wants to pay what i owe on it... so it seems like trading it is my only option. I know I want a harley but I'm a little nervous on spending this much. I bought my v-star brand new in 09 for $7500. So spending double on a used one makes me a little hesitant. Especially since i dont get the chance to ride so much.

That is a tough call since you don't ride much and the Yamaha was new. I would consider the pros and cons on each. For a lot of folks, a dream bike is a Harley and you should always shoot for your dreams. Either way you go you will have a payment. The Harley payment may just be bigger or a bit longer on the loan now. One thing to look at is the Harley is newer and the Yamaha is going on 5 years old now. May get harder to sell if you wait longer.
NO one want to pay what you owe??? I thought you said you were upside down 2k.
Average retail on that bike is between 5300 and 7000, by NADA. Im surprised you cant get 2k for it. I would imagine trade would net you between 3k and 4k...
I would do a little more shopping for a better trade in deal.
My friend just negotiated a deal for a NEW! 2011 FLHRPI for $14,000. He is a great negotiator plus he has bought 8 bikes from this dealership. But there are better deals out there...maybe.
There will always be a better deal... Go with what you want. The bike you have is nice, but as you are finding... It will not hold value. Sucks, but true. Barleys will hold their vale longer, but they are not "investments". If you like the terms of the deal it is pretty good coming from a HD franchise. If they are not HD, then no, the deal isn't awesome, but you are not loosing your @$$. I managed a descent deal on my bike, to trade for an 11. Same thing, HD dealer gave me a break on a lemon. From where I stand, I think I would pose the ESP question. How much for the extended service plan (ESP)? Word of advise, ask if it includes wheels and tires. There is a significant discount if you opt out of wheel and tire. ESP will also cover those potential wire problems if it turns out freddi crugar is the one that removed the police equipment.
You have several dealers in reasonable reach, so you could visit one or two of the others and see what other deals they can offer. Sounds as if a new bike may not be completely out of reach!
