You know, after all the "glad you and your friend are okay........and bikes are replaceable and friends are not..........and hope you can remain friends" and all that crap. This is really disturbing to hear. That a so called "friend", a riding buddy, could be so f'n careless with YOUR life. Every day we ride in the jungle and know when we leave our driveway we are putting ourselves in harms way, but we understand the dangers and accept the consequences. But to get fricken' rammed up the azz by a "friend". That to me is unacceptable. If this were me, whatever excuse this guy has, in my opinion, is not worth the effort my ears would have to put forth to hear it. I would NEVER ride with this guy again. And I wouldn't give a chit if the friendship ended.
Another reason I like to ride alone!
JUST SAYIN'
Stuff happens man....just because you say you like to ride alone has no bearing on a situation like this.....the very same thing could happen to anyone whether riding alone or not.
Everyone is bound to make a mistake now and then...never say never

I tend to agree with you, but it could depend on the reason. It would be interesting to know how it happened. I catch myself daydreaming, but know it could be fatal, so I try to avoid it. One reason I love motorcycles is they force you to focus.

Riding with a partner is like doing anything else in life with a partner. A cop, a firefighter, a foot soldier in a foxhole, it's all the same. Your partner is supposed to cover your back, not fricken' plow into it. I don't care what the reason, a 35MPH slam from behind is unacceptable to me. I wouldn't ride with the guy EVER again. I'm not saying the guy did it on purpose but it doesn't matter. I don't need to give a mistake, a second chance.
Yikes!! I had a friend run into the back of my 2003 RKC the same way, but with much less damage. All I had screwed up was the rear fender and turn signal bar. No one hurt except for maybe feelings. I will admit I wanted to kick the chit out of the guy after that but he was a good bit bigger than me. Still sucks tho either way. 2 nice bikes trashed. Sorry about that.
About a year or so later, he now owned the RKC and went off into a ditch and totalled the bike. Almost died in the wreck. After all this, I still consider him a friend but am still pissed about the bike getting totalled.

I hope the relationship can be fixed as well.I would be pretty pissed off.
Failure to PAY ATTENTION!!!
Unfortunately at your expense as well. Get better and get that bad *** looking bike back on the road!
I saw a riding buddy of mine almost rearend another buddy at a traffic light. I was watching the whole time as they were in front of me. I wanted to throw a beat down on him for being so careless and inattentive. That's no better than a cage not paying attention. Burns my azz.
PAY ATTENTION!!!!!
That sucks dude. About your friend, I know first hand he feels lower than dirt. Trust me on this. I was in the same situation about a month ago. I hit my best friend from behind. He was on a Sportster, I was on my RKC with a passenger. We came to a light and it "short" changed on us, the yellow only blinked and went to red. He got stopped, I couldn't. I can tell you from that perspective, He's hating himself more than you could ever, at least I was. There are probibally lost of reasons why this happened to you two, I do know this, he didn't do it on purpose.
As for Progressive, here in VA., they were fantastic. Very thurough, didn't miss anything. If you have recipts for what you have done to your scoot, that will help.
Your insurance policy shouldn't pay anything. it was his fault. I had a wreck last year and didn't even notify my insurance because it was the other guys fault. Your friends insurance will pay all.
