The original Dyno-Tuned baffles used Silent Sport packing material, some of the best available, that FM guaranteed for life. It was a white particle-based packing that was held in place by plastic wrap, which would burn-off soon after installation. My second-generation Jackpots with standard baffles had another type of baffling material that consisted of sheets wrapped around the baffles, but the Quiet Baffles I bought later had the Silent Sport material. I've been running those for >18 months and I don't notice any change in tone. I'm sure Jamie will pipe-in here and clarify all this.
And what was it like after you repacked them. I got 30,000 on my fat cat.
Big difference. I replaced the stock D&D wrap with a custom blanket from Bristol Core. Really quieted the pipe up, and sounded better than it did stock.
We offer a lifetime warranty on the internal of our mufflers including the packing material. We use a cartridge/pillow style packing on the Jackpot 3.5" and 4" Dyno Tuned mufflers and in our Pro Touring and Carbon mufflers we use Silent Sport loose fill. We also used this loose fill in our first generation Jackpot mufflers. We have tested this packing to 50,000+ miles with minimal reduction of material
Does the packing have any effect on tuning? I pulled the packing out of my Cobra 4" slip-ons, to make them a little louder.
The effects of the packing really depends on the baffle and exhaust design. The baffle itself is the most critical component in the muffler, however the packing not only affects the attenuation of the exhaust note it can also affect the scavenging as well. The packing can lower dB level substantially and also helps absorb higher frequencies which will allow for a deeper exhaust tone.
Jamie....I'm really not obsessing but the tone has changed over time on my scoot. Been running VH Classic Slash Cut Slip-ons for a little over nine years....bunch of miles. Is the packing something I should worry about replacing? If so, what product do you recommend?
Can't wait for my FM EFI Tuner to arrive....should be here tomorrow. Thanks again for that great service.
My jackpots are in transit to Wisconsin. Began getting a decel pop a month or so ago. Kept adding fuel to 0 throttle and could not get decel out.
Pulled mufflers off bike and found a round rubber band like substance at front of muffler. Called Jamie who told me baffles don't breakdown. Further this substance I was seeing was a silicone adhesive that holds the packing to the side of the muffler.
My feeling is that if this sealant wears off. burns off, it will allow air to pass by the baffles and packing causeing this pop.
Mufflers sent to FM to repack.
We recieved your mufflers back and I disassembled them this morning. I do not know how many miles are on them, however they are 1 1/2 years old based on your sales invoice. The internals of both mufflers are in what I would consider in excellent, near new condition. There has actually been only a 4% loss of packing in the left muffler and 6% loss in the right based on the 500G pillow pack cartridges that we use, I actually did more damage to the packing pillow cartridges removing them from the mufflers. The silicone on the inlet nozzle is to prevent the baffle from seizing where it engages 1" into the muffler body so it can be serviced if required. Regardless, we will service the mufflers by cleaning everything up and we will replace the packing pillows. Below is a picture of the disassembled mufflers
