Install now or wait until after trip for new speedometer?
I just picked up my new speedometer for the RKC that has the built in tach, gear indicator and rainbow of colors. I ordered it 3 weeks ago and it just came in yesterday.
I really want it for the trip but had no idea it was on a long backorder.
I've heard a good rule of thumb is never install anything new on a bike 2 weeks before a trip, but this is a plug in factory speedo, so thought I'd get opinions.
Do it after the trip, that way your bike will have less miles on it and you won't have to service it as soon. Will also help when you trade it in when your 2 year warranty expires.
Unless you feel you really have to have it, I would probably wait until after the trip. That way you can take your time, you won't be rushed, and if there should be a problem with the unit, it won't impact your trip. But if it is a really easy 15 minute install, do it now, and test it for a few miles before the trip.
+1 Never do anything major to the bike before a trip, unless you have to. Murphy's law will get you every time.
This.
Other than basic maintenance, I'd never do any work on my bike (or car for that matter) immediately prior to a long trip. While you'd definitely want to get an oil change/brake job/new tires done before a long trip, any sort of actual change to things is just inviting trouble when you can least afford it.
Unless you think you might crash because the new speedometer failed I'd install it. It's just a gauge.
i agree with Jim. It's a gauge, not like a new compensator or something critical. Would you install a new (upgraded) seat before the trip? LOL you bet!
Just be careful not to give the speedo too much attention. Pay attention to the road (and the Mrs.)
I was on-the-fence too when I got new shocks. I changed them out the day before I left.
Put it on and ride. We put one on our RKC and it is really cool with all of the color combo's. One warning though, the light is extremely bright after dark , even on dim mode and does reflect off the windshield.
