if you are tig welding with er 70s there is no reason to purge the pipe with argon only would need purge with stainless or with cromoly
Only if you mig weld with an 85/15 mix of argon/co2 with your ER70s filler material you can achieve 81,000 lbs of tensil strength per cubic inch, thus increasing the weld strength exponentially reducing HAZ
1st two we gutted the cats on we used TIG. Worked just fine. The last 3 have been with stick. Worked just as good. But my welder is a real pro that can do about anything. Gas, TIG, MIG, Stainless. He has worked in power plants as well as welding pipe for the oil fields.
How about Braze-Welding with Castolin-EutecticŽ #16 and fresh Borax mixture?
This is not quite as pretty as a TIG weld but really efficient.
How about Braze-Welding with Castolin-EutecticŽ #16 and fresh Borax mixture? ... Most of the guys here wouldn't know what you're talking about ... I had a old timer teach me ( about 45 years ago ) and he could lay a bead that looked just like a stack of dimes ... Another lost art :>(
I have all three machines. I mig welded mine(OFF THE BIKE) back together, simply because it faster. You can't see any of it behind the heatshield anyways. .....and i'm way better with mig, but no way can people lay down a bead with mig, and look as good as tig! Not if i'm the judge anyways! A nice tig weld is a thing of beauty!!!
I took my head pipe off the bike cut a window into it and then cleaned it out and then put the window i cut out back into place and tig welded it all together. Ive posted pics before as well.
