Default just wondering

I notice on a lot of HD parts numbers are the same on some items but the last 2 after the dash are different. Does this denote the year or does it indicate that a change in the original model has been changed by some minor degree, or both. Sometimes the 2 digits are followed by an A or some other letter. Just wondering..

It seems as though there's really no rhyme or reason to their part numbers and now they're changing them all to un-hyphenated numbers anyways.

Hyphenated -09, -00 etc indicated the year of the part. Suffix letters -99A -00A or B indicated changes of some sort to the part, ( sometimes just the price!)

not always. PN 52583-09A is the backrest I just got for my '03 RKC. says it fits '88-later Touring models.

The year that specific part was made available (not necessarily the year of bike), followed by later revisions (letter designator).
