Default First long trip on 2010 RG..thoughts

First long trip on my relatively new 2010 Road Glide Custom. 2,800 miles in a little over a week (Sturgis trip).

Rode solo from Las Vegas to Sturgis, SD with a couple of side trips.

This is my first touring bike, so here's my thoughts...

-Serious *** issues on the first 1,000 miles. Rode the first leg of the trip without highway pegs. Mistake. Installed hwy pegs in Sturgis.
-I'm 6'1", I need floorboard extensions as well.
-I will invest in a gel pad for long trips only.
-I will invest in a rider back rest. However, this trip, I used my pack and sleeping bag as a back rest and it worked fine.

Had no real issues with the bike. The only issues I had were self induced or from aftermarket products (go figure). I had air cleaner cover issues, and the breather bolts from my Ness Big Sucker backplate leaked a little oil, of which I've heard is common. I just tightened them down a little, and had no problems after that. I will check the o-rings at a later date.

I have the same bike, after my first 200 mile trip I changed the windshield and seat, that solved all my issues as far as comfort, all the other changes I have or will be making are mostly cosmetic or performance, and maybe a little of both.

More thoughts....

Cruise control, 6-speed tranny, and the 96" engine are my friend. I had plenty of throttle at 80 mph to get around semis and grandmas quickly, and with ease.

Here's a couple bike observations or issues....

After the bike had been seriously warmed up, shut down, then restarted..the idle seems a little off. Example, I run 100 miles or so, stop for fuel, fill the tank, then fire the bike up to move away from the pump to park. I'm sure it's a air/fuel mixture thing, with the bike being so warm. Thoughts??

Also, a couple of mornings, I had some starting issues, as in, it'd take a two, maybe three starter button engagements to get it to fire. This only happened a few times, other than that, it'd fire every time on the first pull. It had never done that prior to this trip. Thoughts??

I have a C & C seat I love , but on long trips I take my tour pak , had Mean City redo my stock seat , I rode from Raleigh , NC to Tampa , Fl only stopping for gas and felt fine , before after about 2 1/2 hrs in the saddle I was hurting

After about 800 miles (now have close to 4K on bike) or so my 2011 RK developed the same starting issues as you are describing. Seems to be only in the morning after sitting overnight. Rest of the day it is fine when starting up after a stop etc I keep my thimb on the starter for an extra second now in the morning.

A properly fitting/comfortable seat is an absolute MUST if you plan to survive a long road trip in comfort. My factory OEM seat happens to fit me perfectly, but from threads on the forum here that appears to be a rarity. Individuals all vary, so seat comfort is just something you have to figure out and experiment with until you find the right seat. Next is highway pegs, handle-bars that fit you correctly and a windshield.

If the bike fits your properly you can do 12-15 hour days no problem.
