I went to Sturgis this year for the first time and had an absolute blast. I went with 5 other people and we rode the 1400 miles each way to get there/back. Next year doesn't look like anyone wants to go but I have made reservations for myself to go. I didn't get to see everything I wanted and I really wanted to make a return trip. I sure wish at least one of them would go but if not then I'll just do it myself. Seems I usually make better time when by myself and usually the stops are a little shorter as well. Sounds like next year my wife may fly to rapid city and we'll spend a few days together out there. She isn't a big biker and a couple days is probably all she would be interested in staying out there. Anyone else do this kind of mileage solo? We took mostly rural highways to get up there and I would like to do that again but I am a little uneasy about doing that without someone tagging along in case something were to happen.....any thoughts????
Went Solo this year 2,568 miles round trip plus over 700 miles in the Sturgis area. Had the time of my life. Put all the usual concerns of riding alone aside and just rode. Not one problem on the whole trip other than a little hail leaving Sturgis. Took Hwy 2 through Nebraska and believe me, their is nothing out there, but that was the beauty of the ride through that State. After all, it is about the ride and not the destination.
funny I took hwy 2 as well. We had one rider lose a motor about 100 miles outside of Chadron, NE on hwy 2. We were in the middle of nowhere......and HOG confirmed that when they told us "we don't know what to tell you about a wrecker" LOL.
Went from central NC to Chicago for a few days, then on to Rapid City.
Did the reverse on the trip home.
2,000 miles each way plus 1000 there. Took just under 3 weeks for the whole trip.
Had a blast, met lots of people, drank a few drinks and saw lots of sights.
Did it all on my Dyna
Biggest problem I had was a blown headlight (but I had a spare with me.)
I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Wait...you were carrying a spare headlight? Is there a hidden meaning that my thick skull cannot comprehend or were you having problems with the headlight and were carrying a spare...just in case.

Long trip I always carry a spare bulb in my waterproof case. They can be a pain to find, especially in the middle of the night.....in nowhere, South Dakota.....LOL.
This just happened to be the first time I ever needed it.
