If you want a good quality bag without the high sticker price then Nelson -Riggs is the way to go.
I have 3 of there bags and the quality is as good as any. One of which is a water proof bag that is one of the few on the market. No need for a cover and it works great.
I've got a Street Glide with a passenger back rest and 2-up luggage rack behind it. I place my $20 carry-on luggage bag (yes, carry on the airplane type bag) on its side on the 2-up luggage rack and strap it to the back rest and luggage rack. Then I place my $11 back pack over the carry-on luggage bag and strap it around the back rest.
Wish I had a picture, but maybe you get the gist - cheap and effective.
Pretty hard to beat a used T-Bag. I just sold one for about half price. Be patient and look around------they are out there. A good place to look is right here in the classified forum.
I personally like "Ultra Tour Bag" by Kuryakyn. You can find them online for $139 and if you have a flat rack it fits great. http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/696/Ultra-Tour-Bag
I like the way it opens from either side or the top. Has an adjustable shelf inside so you can keep some stuff separate. Comes with rain fly and all straps.
well, if you want cheap, go to an Army Navy store and get an "Alice" pack. it's OD green and has 3 outside pockets for small gear, inside pocket for other items. it you want to water proof it use a trash bag, it has cool factor.
JK, i've had a Kury bag for over 3 yrs, before i got my Glide. It worked really good for my use until i lent it out and got it back with a blown zipper. in short it's repaid itself many times over. i guess i'll try taking it to an upolstery shop to see if i can get it fixed.

I've got a Kuryakyn Full Dresser bag that velcro's to my backrest. Its a big (huge) bag that holds a ton of gear. It was $120-ish from Eastern Performance through ebay. I've been pretty happy with the bag. I've got maybe four trips with it, one of which was a 10 day trip. The bag comes with a really nice rain cover and an assortment of tie down straps.
The Kuryakyn Full Dresser isn't as nice looking as a lot of the new HD other bags, but it does a nice job for me.
The nice thing about many of these bags (mine included) is you can spin them around and use them as a back rest. I think that is a pretty important feature for a long solo trip.
