Default 08 Electraglide stereo installation

Hey fellas. I have read through multiple posts here, and still haven't come up with a concrete answer.

I have an 08 Electra standard, with no stereo. I have the head unit and speakers, but am just stumped as to whether I need a 3rd party wiring harness or not, since my bike didn't have a factory installed stereo.

I would like to be able to use my hand controls, but it isn't life or death.

I know you guys are probably sick to death of this topic, but it's really hard to dig up definitive answers for this.

Also, as an aside, any particular mini-amps that are recommended? Arc has some nice ones, but they are too steep for me.

The wiring is there, everything should just plug right in.

I have an 2008 FLHT. I bought a stock stereo that someone removed and installed it in my bike. All the wiring, plugs, etc was there. Just plugged right in. You need speakers, speaker mounts and antenna. I added an arc amp to mine later.

If you have the wiring diagrams and can make your own interface cable then you
can get the OEM controls working with aftermarket radios.

Biketronics makes the interface cables for certain radios ( around $200 ).

Hogtunes IMO is maybe the most reasonable $$$ for pretty good equipment. They
have amps and speakers. Much better than stock HD.

You can do the whole thing for around $500 or so.

Not sure if it is still the case for 2008 but on earlier models you needed speaker rings
( to point the speakers at the rider ) in order to get best sound. Biketronics should
have those too.

So, went to do the install last night. Got the fairing taken apart no problem, all the wiring was there for the install, and I went to put the stereo in....and it didn't fit. I just (wrongly) assumed that the hole would be a single DIN size, when apparently it is much larger at about 8.5 x 2.75 inches.

I put it all back together and have spent the last several hours googling to see if anyone has any suggestions to mount this, besides the ridiculously overpriced cradle by hawgwired. Has anyone used any generic dash kits with any luck?

I was considering just ordering one of the kits from Arc Audio, but after reviewing what is included, I cannot tell if it has a dash installation kit with it either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Biketronics sells an installation kit that includes the trim for the front of the radio as well as mounting blocks for securing the radio to the vertical fairing brackets. Many here, myself included, were very satisfied with the their installation kit.

A good car audio shop could do the radio install using the plastic tray found in the EG Standard and police model EG's--my first Sony was installed that way on my police model EG w/o handlebar controls. For me, I was happy to later use the BT install kit, and install the Biketronics interface for handlebar controls since it was much safer to control the radio with the handlebar controls than pushing buttons on the radio with my gloved fingers.

Good luck with your project.

I have an 06 Standard and went with the Biketronics kit for two reasons. It is an easy install that lets me use the handlebar controls but the best thing about it is that it gives you adjustable automatic volume control. As you slow down the volume drops off. My suggestion to you is to give them a call and tell them what head unit you have. Their customer service is great.

By the way, mine has been on the bike for over 80,000 miles.
