If you can afford it, having the crank welded and balanced is a reliable fix. But, you have 41,000 miles on the first crank, I would expect the new crank to be at least as reliable as the last one. So if you can't afford the fix, you should have time to think about your next move. Ride it and do what pleases you.
I jog every morning. I go about 5 miles and notice all the Harleys going down the road. What I notice is a lot of the riders lugging their bikes. A lot of guys are shifting to second and third at really low r.p.m.s. Maybe they think they are being quiet for the neighbors. That lugging is hard on that pressed together crank, the compensator too. That's why they hear tranny noises. If you ride your bike right these late model cranks seem to hold up pretty well. If you jolt them by lugging, or dropping the hammer to do burnouts it stresses the flywheels assembly. Lugging is like an impact wrench jolting the crank.
That's just something I have noticed. My 103" '07 Streetglide runs great with 36,000 miles (not my only bike), I ride it fast but don't lug or do burnouts. I'll bet I get 100,000 miles out of it.
well stopped by the dealer today to get a update , all the parts are in except the new crank , they expect that in about another week , have found out a few things like there have been 4-5 updates on the cranks since 07 and the newer bikes have not been having the crank problems , ask one service manager if he has had many problems with the 07 bikes and he said no , ask another one [ at same dealership ] and he told me he had 5 in there with mine right now ,so hopefully there will be no more problems if I ever get my baby back
I have a 07 103 SG and have about 13000 miles on the clock, last month while drving i heard a pop and no oil press. took it to the dealer they found that the crank ate up the oil pump they told me that the left bearing went out and that caused the crank to wobble. it never gave me a warning it vibrates just as much now then it did befor it went out. I called harley and told them what happened so they called the dealer and told them that they would pay for the crank and some labor. the dealer rebuilt the bottom end, new crank, oil pump, and they also installed a SE lefty bearing they said that it is better then the stock. runs good now. hope it will last longer then another 13000 miles.
I ended up paying 1500 half of the bill better then all of the bill. the moco calles it a good will warranty. so if you have this problem try calling the moco and see what they will do for you.

there's def a problem with 07 cranks. not sure if it is becuase later models have IDS and IDS cushions feedback to the cranks, or if it's the heat management in later models 07's didnt have heat management and sometimes my 07 would heat up so bad that the engine sounded like someone was shaking a tool box. They started using SE cranks at some point so there are actually two cranks out there in the 07's.
talked to dark horse and although they advertise a 500 dollar crank service, by the time they get done with plugging, weldng, balancing, they are at 700 bucks and they push pretty hard for you to buy their new rods which will bring the costs to 1100 bucks. If I could get a re-preshed truing , plug, weld and balance for 500, I'd go for it. But 1100 is crazy. let the crank scissor and just buy a new oil pump and crank if it ever happens.
Mine went out at around 28k miles. It basically took out a lot of stuff from the oil pump on. I found a local guy to true it, plug it and weld it and install the timken bearings. He also set up the bottom end for me. He did a great job, but I wish he could have balanced it.
Either way, I'm very happy with the bottom end and very confident in it.
See if you can get your hands on it before the dealer installs it, then have it plugged and welded. We plug and weld alot of cranks since we do a ton of performance work. I believe it runs around 150 bucks. (I just wrench and tune, I don't handle the money end). One of the hardest things i've seen on them is improper downshifting. I cringe when I hear someone "chirp" the tire when downsifting. That's alot of rotating mass to slow down that fast.
