Default 07 cranks

my 07 Ultra is in the shop getting the motor repaired [ rebuilt, ESP ] , the crank went bad and took out the oil pump and so on , my question is for other 07 owners or other 96" owners that have had problems , told the dealer what I have read about the 07 cranks and the dealer tells me that I will get any updates that are out for my motor , so have you had any more crank problems or was it repaired with any updates [ new crank ] , woundering weather to unload my bike or keep it , really do love the bike

Are you getting the engine rebuilt through the Harley Factory rebuild? If so, then your engine will be updated as far as they are able to update it.

I do not know if H-D has done anything about making the flywheels less likely to slip and become un-aligned. A friend of mine just pulled apart a 2003 Heritage and replaced the flywheel assembly for the same reason as yours, and it also tore out the oil pump. He replaced it with a unit that had been welded to prevent the flywheels from slipping on the rod journal. Welding or pinning is about the only way to be sure they won't slip again.

So you think the 07s have the extra crapy cranks? What are you baseing this statement on? Explain how they are different from all the other later year cranks inclunding the 08, 09 10, 11 and now the 2012s. There are thousands of 07s that have never had a crank problem including mine with 40,000 miles on it. Blanket statements made because someone has a certain problem with a certain year motorcycle are the biggest negative aspect of all forums.

well hold on cause mine has 41000 0n it and I base my statement on all the articals on here about early 07s to all 07s and early 08s having a lot of crank shaft problems , I am not condeming them at all I am trying to find some answers , and that is one thing I am woundering is if they put a 2011 or 2012 crank in mine if they are the same, will that fix what ever the problem is

When I looked up the part number for the 07 and 09 crank assemblies the part number is showing it as SE Flywheel Kit '06+Dyna. I am guessing that must be an upgraded flywheel assy. Part numbers are showing 23729-07A or -07B.

there was a problem with 07 cranks scissoring. not sure what the deal was....maybe just bikes made on a monday or friday. Lots of 07's out there don't have any issues at all....those were probally made on tues, wens, or thurs.

I have an 07 and also am thinking about throw the bike over the fence. the money I would spend to make the bike reliable....would close the gap on trading in for something newer.

So my vote, if you can unload it, unload it. If you plan to keep it...send the crank out to have plugged , welded and balanced. 500 to 700 buck depending on how out of true it is.

My '07 Ultra had runout of .00325" for last couple of seasons. When doing the 107" upgrade this past winter, did a check on the wrist pin bushings, and they were at max limit of wear. One would have thought the bike had 100,000 miles on it! Actual mileage was ~42,000.

So, sent the crank to Darkhorse for complete balance/blueprint/true/plug/weld, along with new heavy duty/made in USA rods. Now the bottom end is up to par with the rest of the build.

I would not recommend using an H-D stock/replacement crank! The Darkhorse upgrade to your existing crank is reasonably priced; and will last for the life of your engine.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, a new bike is going to have the same, weak crank as the '07! Leave it stock, and it'll probably get one through the warranty period; but ride aggressively or increase the power output, and it becomes a crap shoot on whether the crank will survive or not.

Just my

Stupid question but other than the motor shelling out, how would you know the crank is bad, excessive vibration?
