I didn't read all the replies so I apologize if I am repeating here: I love my Ultra and my wife is really comfortable on the back. Once she takes a long ride with you and you're able to store all your stuff in Tour Pak and have communication over the intercom all her doubts will fade away.
Get the Ultra, keep the King (betcha in less than a year you sell the King <grin>), also that '09 is tad over priced IMO, what kinda extras does it have, aside from the warranty?
Ultra is the best bike Harley makes imo. I rode mine 5k miles in 9 days recently, through rain storms and nice weather. Most bikers that talk smack about Ultras dont realize how well these big bikes handle. I'm on my 3rd one and loved everyone of them. I also ride a hot-rod police roadking for shorter hops and just putzing around.
Icame off a 05 Heritage Classic to a 2011 ultra and man what a difference! My wife always got figity on the Heritage after an hour or so, but the Ultra she can go all day. I kept my heritage for a couple of months after I had the " queen Mary" and rode it once and couldn'twait to get off it! Good luck
JJ definitely get an ultra. Its easy to turn it into a streetglide for those short runs. As far as lookin old, just dont use those big ugly boom mikes for the 2 way communication. Just turn your head and talk to her! Oh and 21 for an 09!!??? WAY too high.
You've heard it all... I'll add the same. I have owned / ridden just about every bike possible from metrics to iron and in all sizes. I had the same opinion of the Ultra as your wife until I rode one. Most interesting for me is that the bike does not seem big. I did an Iron Butt ride on a VTX 1800 and it seemed huge (heavy) compared to the Ultra. They are not for everyone or nothing else would be made or sold, but they are incredible bikes.
Thanks everybody. I pulled the trigger yesterday and bought a new leftover 2011 Ultra. Picking it up Thursday after the stage 1 and big louie's are on. Riding the 03 RKC up saying goodbye and saying hello to my new Ultra...
