Ok, I have a 2008 anniversary ultra (copper top). I want to get my inner fairing painted. So my friend does painting has his own shop etc and offered to paint it for me. I want a 2 tone copper/black to match the outer fairing. I was thinking black around the gauges and behind the mirrors with copper on top and bottom rest of fairings. So i went round and round looking for codes, priced out harley paint etc. I can get the painted copper inner fairing set from HD for approx $430.00 with my hog discount from my dealer. I figured this way the copper pearl is already on it and only have to add the black and more clear. My friend agreed that it is much less work this way. My concern is I want to follow the pinstripes from the front fairing around and continue on the inside to match. There are 2 stripes, a orange and a tan gold thin one. How would that be done? can tape be used and cleared over that? I am not a painter and have no clue. I would like to have it all under the clear with no bumps if I can. Also does anyone know what black is used? I would think it is vivid black. My friend likes to use PPG paint but I would need the code for that black which is hard to find. Any help would be great.
Send a PM to member jharanin; he works for PPG and is very good about supplying PPG codes for HD colors.
Also, your friend or you can call your local PPG auto paint distributor who should have a computer to access PPG's database for mixing formulas for OEM paints which will include HD colors accessible by model year.
Your local HD store will have a "paint book" that is available on the parts dept's computer and can provide the color names for your bike, including the pinstripes. The PPG computer can also provide formulas for the pinstripe colors.
There are at least a couple of two-tone/pinstriped copper top inner fairings on this forum with pictures. IIRC, member dawg is one of the better ones. There is also a thread titled something like "inner fairing shoot-out" or something similar with pictures of copper top inner fairings. Use the search function to find them.
I recently got my inner fairing painted. HD wanted 200 qt. for the black pearl paint. My indy took the bike to a Carquest auto parts store to get the paint code. They shot it with a gun and got the code, 80.00 qt. instead of 200.00.
