I live about 15 miles from Sturgis and I can tell you from all the years of living here it was defiantly down in attendance this year.
Every year I make a trip up to a friends house that lives between Sturgis and Deadwood for a BBQ and to watch the bikes go by and it only took about half the time to get there as it did in years past. I spoke to several vendors and they all said the same thing.... Not much going on this year.
I hope that it turns around in years to come! I have been riding most of my life and enjoy the rally and all that it brings. I do seem to steer clear of the long rides during the rally though. When you live here and have some of the best riding in the country right out your back door it seems a little congested during the rally.
Thank you to all who didi come from a local rider!

it was nice to see vacancy signs at the hotels that jack up their rates during rally week each year. Maybe with a few lean years the rates will drop a bit, but I'm not counting on it. Next year if the economy is still bad I'll wait till we get there to look for lodging, like we did years ago.

You hit it! I had a co-worker come in on Wednesday this year with no pre plans on where to stay and he had several options available. I think he ended up with a room for around a hundred bucks and could have stayed several nights if he would have wanted to.
That says allot! My brother inn law rents his house out most years and didn't even get one call this year.
I was really shocked at the scope of "STURGIS"... There are so many things going on in the region, so many people, so many bikes.. It's really hard to take in. Regardless of attendance, the area is a beautiful place to ride and explore.
This was my 1st Sturgis and I'd have to agree wholeheartedly with this statement.
