Default Dealer service

Took my RGU in for the 10K service, and got a call from the service manager. They found shavings in the primary, and traced it to the stator/rotor setup. Had one in stock, but had to order the other.

I started going to the dealer for service a couple of years ago, after watching how little my indy was actually doing on a service and how much more thorough the dealer was. The dealer costs more, but I have no complaints about their work. I could do my own services, but choose not to - I just don't enjoy routine maintenance like I used to. I don't know if the indy would have caught the stator problem or not, but it's hassle-free with the dealer. They have all the service records, the warranty authority, and will stand behind the product and their work.

I know that I have an exceptional dealer. They weren't always that way. The dealership changed hands in 2004, and the new owners have worked hard to improve all aspects of the dealership. They have gone the extra mile for me on more than one occasion.

There are good dealers, good indys, bad in both, and everywhere in between. I'm very happy with Bakersfield Harley-Davidson. They make me feel as though they value my business.

Good to hear. To make a find like that goes to show that they are thorough in their work. Not just some flunkie draining and refilling the oil.

Dealer service depts are like every other business... most are very average (approx 60%), a few are exceptional (approx 20%), and a few absolutely suck (approx 20%).

Sounds like you found a good 20 percenter.

That is great to hear! Really is!

Dealership service departments are only as good as their techs.

I use to go to an indy, but with this bike I starting taking to the dealer for all of my service. I haven't regretted it yet. They do great work, and no loose bolts here and there. I can remember when I picked up a bike at the indy the screws holding my switch housings were loose. I went to hit the start button, the whole housing slipped around the handlebar.

A couple of weeks ago, the wife and I saddled up to ride over to the coast for lunch. A little ways out of town, a medium-large dog came out to chase me - and ended up taking my wife down. First call was 911 to get medical help (she was bruised but thankfully not broken) and the second call was to the owner of Bakersfield Harley-Davidson. He sent two guys and the dealership truck with the lift to collect the wreckage. They were less than ten minutes behind the ambulance, and took that worry off my mind.

Looks like it will be totaled. If so, we'll be buying a new one - guess where from?

Happy to hear you have a good dealer.

I brought my bike to the local dealer for the 20,000 service and to replace the front motor mount. They didn't change the fork oil saying the new manuals for the new bikes state 50,000 miles not 20,000 like my 2000 manual. The handlebar control housing bolts were loose on the clutch side, the oil filter was leaking, and the motor mount was installed up side down.

I've done all my own work ever since, aside from mounting tires.
