I just purchased a new 2011 Limited and rode 906 miles in 8 days. Coming up on the 1000 mile service. Does anyone have any suggestions on weather I should have the dealer use regular or synthic oil. Has any one had any experience with both and what are the pros and cons of each? Thanking you guys in advance for any opnions. The engine is the 103.
synthetic at the change- I use the syn 3 in my twin cam.
It last longer, lubricates better and resists heat breakdown ( which is important- oil is part of the cooling system and removes heat from the hottest parts of the motor).
lots of Guys use other brands--- I have bikes over 50 years old running H-D oil. I have bikes with very high mileage running H-D oil.
i take care of my stuff like I'm going to keep it a long time.
enjoy the new ride!

Synthetic is more heat resistant & clings to surfaces better, meaning less wear at start-up when the oil hasn't had a chance to circulate yet. If you don't plan on keeping it for many miles, then use dino.
When I do my own oil changes,I alway use Mobil 1 full synthetic. Recently I let the local dealer do mine (free 1st service). I used Syn3 in motor,+ in the primary, and Redline Shockproof in the trans. It's kinda nice if something happens, I don't have to worry about HD pulling some crap about the service, since the local dealer did it.

Ha, You beat me to it.... Redline in all three holes to be precise....
Yeah I have always used Mobil in the motor,+ in th primary, and Redline in the trans. The only thing that has changed recently is letting the dealer put Syn3 in the motor. Redline shockproof is great stuff, smooth shifting, and very easy to find neutral.
Synthetic dissipates heat better, more shear resistant, and has more additives to resist breakdown. NO it doesn't 'cling' better to anything. If you want extended drain intervals use synthetic and sleep easy but if you are gonna change it at 2000 miles don't waste your money. I have done alot of homework on oil. I use rotella simply because I have had good results in my old v-star. Mobil 1 isn't a full synthetic unless it's their EP line so don't be fooled by the tri-syn label. Amsoil,red-line,motul and royal purple are real synthetics. Mobil 1(other than EP LINE) castrol, penzoil are all made from a group 3 conventional basestock and not really synthetic. It's your bike but the lower engine temps are enough for me to go synthetic. Ride safe
