Yesterday, I started my bike and heard a noise coming from the primary area. I was about 120 miles from home so I prayed to the Harley gods to get me home. About 100 miles into it I heard some screeching and then I noticed my volt gauge was now just about 12 or slightly under. I made it home, pulled off the primary cover and found the compensator nut had loosened up and the stator rotor teeth are all ground away. The threads on the crank are messed up but I think repairable.
I just ordered a 7/8-14 die to try and clean up the threads, hopefully I can. Now the real question is, could I have knocked the crank out of true or anything else from riding it as far as I did? I really don't want to take this apart, I ony have about 5k miles on the 95 kit. The motor is out of an 06 Ultra..
Any input would be great. Thanks guys..
Any good mechanic with a set of dial indicators can tell you if there is any runout on your crankshaft. You probably can't see the runout by looking at it, but it is very easy to measure.
Did you order the "thread chaser" die, or the thread cutter" die, two different animules. The chaser is for threads that are damaged, or have a dented area where they may have been bumped and flattened.
I have one of those, I haven't had great success with it in the past... If the threads were more pronounced I think it would work, but their dinged pretty good. I'm going to pick up a dial indicator after work and check the crank runout because if that's bad then the crank has to come out anyway..
Any idea what the spec is for crank runout??

IIRC, the spec for max runout was still .003" in '06; changed to .012" in '07. You should check the pinion runout on the cam side. Should be checked with the cam plate off. Check the oil pump for wear; if the crank was tweaked, it could show up even in 100 miles if tweaked enough.

If runout is .005"or less, run it.
I rode a friends bike that we measured at .007. mine is at .0045 last check. I couldn't tell a difference between the two bikes.
