Wait, is splitting lanes not legal everywhere (honest question)? How can "liberal" CA have this legal if other states find it unsafe? As a person that's lived in CA for their entire life I thought it was legal everywhere.
That being said I only split if there is ZERO movement, 5mph or more and I wait in line. You wouldn't believe how many "motorcycle and automobile with fatality" I heard on the AM traffic report when I lived in SoCal.

As far as I know, CA is the only state where it is legal to split and/or share lanes.

Bus, cyclist, pedestrian and emergency lanes are strictly forbidden over here. We can split lanes as long as our speed remains 3 to 5 mph faster than the traffic.
A bunch of us were trapped in a traffic backup coming out of Boothbay Harbor Maine onto Route One. We drove down the breakdown lane for miles, yelling "air cooled motor", until we reached Route One.
In the UK, I'd split lanes (filtering, we call it) if there's enough room. I do it almost every weekday morning during the commute. A surprisingly large number of people will move out of the way for me too.
I ride in congested traffic somewhat regularly. I plan my riding to avoid peak traffic periods when I can, but when I do get stuck in traffic, I just take my lumps like everyone else. On the older bikes, excessive heat isn't a huge problm. On the newer bikes, you've got EITMS.
I drove a cage in CA once on vacation and watched as some bikes, one was a CHP bike, split the lanes between me and the car beside me. We were driving 70 mph! I was shocked to find out that was legal. As an LEO, I handle way too many crashes from vehicles driving up the shoulder to pass stopped traffic. No way I would do either on my bike. Don't know about CA, but in IN there are way too many cage drivers that would intentionally cut you off just to watch you crash.
