If your gonna paint it yourself, do yourself a favor and use two part epoxy primer and clear. You don't need a compressor and gun if you don't already have one:
This stuff is the bomb if your using rattle cans. Adheres like glue (cause it is), dries super hard, very impervious to gasoline. A backyard painters best friend.
I changed my FLHT center console out for one off of a Streetglide,used heat gun to remove insert with no problem not able to reuse but didn't want to nice chrome under it !!!
I took the insert off of my Road King. I mangled the heck out of the old one. The old glue came off with acetone leaving behind a smooth chrome surface.
Here is the finished center console. I will be doing ALL my parts in powdercoat in due time. But I like the way it looks for now.
