Default Question about painting chrome center console

Going to paint my chrome center console flat black. Was wondering about the plastic part in the center of the console. The black plastic piece with FLHX on it. Do I pry it off and sand off the glue or what?? Has anyone done this before? Can I get the plastic piece off easy in one piece or what?
Thanks ALOT.

you can paint the chrome piece, just scuff it a little with 400 grit sandpaper...as far as the insert goes if you can get it out, it will paint the same, BUT, when I changed mine, it was glued pretty good, it bent to where it was unuseable..so it was good that I had already bought a new one >>>LOL good luck

The center part can't be removed without damaging it beyond repair. I would think you could paint over it but not sure.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I really don't want the insert there anyway. I could just paint over it. I'm not sure if I pull it off. Will there be ALOT of glue and unfinished metal there. Anyone who took off the insert, how did it look under there? ALOT of glue? Can I just remove the glue and sand and paint?
Thanks!!!

hey, rather than sand- and have "swirl" marks, get sand or media ( walnut shells, baking soda) blasted.

or have a chrome plater take the chrome surface off with acid- that's what I did with the dash on my fxrp, then I painted wrinkle black

Check with local old car restoration shop, tell them what you are trying to do.

I have the wispy black cherry pearl dash insert from iron glass for my 06sg but not installed yet - iron glass told me to use a heat gun to loosen the glue & that the insert would come out easily & then to use goo gone to get rid of the residue - hope this helps

Your bike, but I would've removed the insert...it's a sticker & comes off real easy. Then you could've added a new one for custom look. All epoxy came off mine w/tape...JMO, but my opinion could change after seeing pics. Another option would've been powdercoating the console for tougher finish...paint could start coming off/fade over time.
