Default Fairing insert t-r-o-u-b-l-e

On a recent road trip I had to JB Weld one of my top fairing inserts back into the inner fairing and did not get it pushed back far enough in the inner to get a good grip on the windshield/outer fairing. Wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get the insert out (break the JB Weld loose) and reinsert it at the proper depth to hold the outer properly?

Your probably not gonna break the jb weld loose without breaking the faring. You might try trimming off the insert to make it flush. Good luck!

Maybe with a high speed drill cut away from the JB weld to weaken the bond. Not sure if a drimel type tool would have an attachment that could drill,cut/grind away at the bonding material to gently break it free. Sort of like a dentist cleaning up around a cavity.

And then when you get the old one out go to the dealer and get the repair inserts they thread in and hold good. Ask me how I know.

You may want to try heat. The heat will soften the epoxy enough to remove the insert. Find a longer bolt that fits in the insert. Grab it with a vice grip, and lay the torch to it till it glows. Thread it into the insert and start a slow tug. You may need to heat it again to transfer enough heat to the epoxy.

Good luck

The insert would be soft enough that you could easily file off the protruding part, after removing the outer fairing.

If you really want to remove the insert, I would drill it out, using progressively bigger bits, and the drill at low speed.
