Default Mini Tach signal

I just installed the mini tach on my 2011 Road King Classic. I installed it exactly as per the instructions using the #3 pin on the connector at the back of the speedometer. The tach lights up but does read the engine RPM. The needle jumps when powered up.

I stopped into the Dealer and asked the simple question, what is the signal sent from the ECU or speedometer? No one there could answer. Is the signal 4-20 ma, 0-5 volts, PWM, frequency or what. I would like to use a meter to see if I am getting the signal?

Did you ever get it figured out,,,, I'm trying to install a used 68953-04 on my 2005 FLHR,,, it came with no connectors,,, and I don't know if I need one for the back of the Speedo connection or the one for the ECM...

Any help appreciated...

Default Figured it out

The problem was with the tach. I bought the mini tach unit off of E-bay as one that was never installed. It turned out the seller fried it by connecting the live power to the signal wire. He did refund the money so he was honest about it. I ordered a new one and installed it. You do need the connectors for the back of the speedo and having the correct connectors help with the power if you want to use the fuse panel. The connectors are very delicate and I damaged a few getting the push pin installed at the bottom of the speedo. I ordered extras off the internet.

Mine works fine, I am only disappointed with the fit of the billet aluminum mount that bolts to the clamp cover on the road king. I tried two of them but whoever is casting these for Harley is not getting the bottom straight. There is gap on either end where the mount hits the clamp. My understanding is the current mount is designated with an “a”. The older versions were better. Harley continues to sacrifice quality to get things cheaper.
