I have a 2010 FLHR and the only mods are V&H oval mufflers. I have 28,000 kms on the engine. At about 22,000 kms the engine starting getting noisly on cold starting { clacking } and after a minute or so it seemed to quiet down and seemed to sound normal again. Lately after running for a couple of hours I shut the engine off to go into the coffee shop for about a half hour and when I return and start up the bike it revs high and remains that way for about 30 seconds and the clacking is unbelievable for about two minutes and then it quiets down again. Almost sounds like it has low oil and is running dry, however when I check the fluids they are right up. As I said this has just started and I have always run 20W50 Amsoil in engine, Amsoil 75W140 in the trans and regular primary oil. Any ideas as my warranty is over in a few months.
This sounds like your lifter is deflating, and when you start up it inflates again, this is either caused by a back lifter or your oil is breaking down from high temps.
My 2007 does the same thing, completely different oil and all levels are good. 42k on my motor. My 2004 TC88 did the same thing, same oil. I would say it's top-end clatter (valve train) due to oil draining down after a long period of sitting. I hate the fact the motor revs to about 1500 to 2k cold, then drops down to idle speed. Makes me cringe sometimes.
The ECM will "learn" the throttle position and if you have the throttle slightly cracked when shutting the bike off, it will "learn" the cracked position as the new idle position.
well, being left handed, we think differently....my bike has some chatter and soon will be going thru a DIY 103 upgrade. I am expecting to find bent push rods , which I believe is contributing to my chatter problems. Your chatter problems could be numerous things and it's one of those issues where 20 folks could suggest something different and depending on the history of your bike, no one would be wrong. Start with the easy stuff and work your way down the complexity list. Lucas syntethic oil additive helps quite my chatter problem...but the chatter is still there.
Thanks to all those who replied. I think I will make an appointment to take in my bike to the dealer and find out what is wrong. Hope they check it out and don't say thats how all harleys run because it never did before.
