Default 2009 primary chain noise at idle

On my 2009 out of warantee Street Glide, I have a noise coming from the primary case. It sounds like the chain, but I'm not sure. Whenthe bike is in gear and clutch engaged the noise is gone. Then when I put it in neutral with the clutch still engaged , noise still gone. When I let the clutch out the noise starts up again. I've always had a clunk, clack, when shifting from neutral to 1st. Any suggestions.

Have you checked the chain adjustment?

Sounds like the inner primary bearing. I just did the bearing and race swap on my 09, 45,000 miles. It isnt a bad job with the manual and a few tools.

I have an 09 streetglide that did the exact same thing at 18000 miles. The harley replacement is now a tough job but you will need a special puller to get the race off the shaft. There are some aftermarket bearings out there that are a one piece sealed style. I believe baker transmissions sells one. I highly recommend replacing the factory style with the one piece design. I used a factory style on mine because I was in a hurry, but I will swap it this winter for the aftermarket stlye. Hope this helps.

Got a picture of it? What kind of shape was inner race. Getting ready to go ito mine at 40K. Just tired of listing to it.

PS V8, the clunk is normal. You have the auto adjuster. Heard they sometimes it gets too tight if you have a lot of run out from chain wear with a lot of miles. Also hear some stick. There is a procedure to make it advance if it's stuck from too easy driving. Think your are suppose to throttle it hard and then let off quickly. This abrupt pull/push snaps the chain and lets adjust advance. Some people like me never drive that way. The B version of the auto tensioner has a big center section of teeth cut away so it does not stick.

Sorry no pictures. Inner primary bearing race wasn't real bad, was starting to show some wear. The bearing on the other hand was junk, 4 or 5 rollers badly pitted. I had hoped to last until winter. Changing primary fluid rushed my tear down. Most time spent cleaning metal filings out of clutch and stator.
