My question is if a bike sits in the same spot for too long, is it possible to get flat spots on the tires? I move mine periodically, and ride it, not as much as I used to, but still ride it. A friend and I were discussing it. He says you can, I thought that it only happened to the older tires, and that new radials don't get flat spots.
i don't know the technical answer to this question but I'll share this with you.
I just finished doing maintenance on a 2001 softail standard and a 2002 vrod that belong to a friend of mine. He let them sit for almost 2 years without moving. Course batteries were dead, tires were flat, etc etc etc.
The tires on the sfotail appear to be in good shape although they are tubed tires. The tires on the vrod will not hold air. I'm not a fan of stuff like fix-a-flat, etc so not about to put that stuff in there. The bikes are done and I simply told him this;
If I were to ride these two bikes, I would not feel comfortable in doing so until the tubes are replace on the softail and the tires replaced on the vrod. Total of $500 - $600 for all 4 tires is well worth my life.
If I was going to store a bike for a long time, I think I'd figure out a way to store it elevated so neither tire was touching the ground. That way I wouldn't have to worry about it.
